Age Bracket Creep

At the outset I would like to make it clear that these comments are not a reflection on any particular member but I do think the matter needs to be addressed.
The problem occurs when team members move up into the next age division and their previous achievements effect the rankings in their new bracket.
I do not know if any anomalies occur when members move between the younger age divisions but I feel there is an issue when members move into the “Legends” group.
The inexorable march of time dictates that eventually most of us will move into this group. All Individual Rankings recorded will become a record of “lifetime achievements” and not necessarily achievements attained whilst being an Oldie. Now is the time to consider this.
I do not think there would many members seeking to improve their standing in an age grouping by using performances from their earlier group.
Is there a way that Lifetime Achievements can be retained and displayed while still preserving the valid credentials of particular age divisions?
Just as an aside….I do not feel like a legend. There are legends in the GPSTC and I have great esteem for them, but just getting old does not make a legend.

Maybe an "Old Fart"division should be created

with the younger people the sport is dead and i think it will be exstinct in 5 to 10 years time. i have never seen a guy under 30 speed sail i dont think ever. I am 32 and most the time i sail with guys 40 and over. I think the sailboard companys have failed at getting young people into the sport. They need to produce boards at cheaper prices for people to learn on like they did with the plastic bomboras in the 90s or our sport will be over soon.

I get really get ticked off thinking about the amount of people missing out on such a great sport cause of the costs. They find it easier and cheaper to pick up a surf board for $200 bucks and join the rest of the herd instead of going a different way and trying windsurfing.

Hi Herby,

The way the GPS Team Challenge is set up, only achievements done while in that age division count in the rankings. You may notice that some people are in two age divisions, this is because they set a certain record while in one division, and when they go to the next division they have to do those hard yards again.

For example, my current 2 sec PB is 35.597 knots. If I were to suddenly become a legend, and I did 20 knots, my PB in the Legend table would be 20 knots.
At least I think that's how it works!!

So I don't think it's a problem? Let me know if that's what you mean.

but then we could use Daffy as an example . He just gets faster and faster as he gets older! By the time he hits 65, no one will come close

On the contrary I don't think I have seen the sport this healthy since the 80's. Everytime I have gone sailing lately I have noticed more and more people out than there used to be. Late 90's early norties it would not have been uncommon to literally be the only person out somedays. Now you have to fight for parking spots, you have to watch when you gybe and you HAVE to take beers with you for you and your new mates to drink afterwards. I think GPS sailing has been the main reason for all this and if you haven't seen young people under 30 speed sailing then you obviously aren't sailing in the right spots. I take great pleasure in taking my 12 and 8 yr old boys out sailing and I am quite confident that they will want to do the sport for many years to come.
windtechno it is not up to the manufacturers to encourage new people into the sport, it is up to US! I think your view that the sport will be extinct in 5-10 years in incredibly short sighted.

Herb I am actually looking forward to moving up an age bracket for some bizarre reason....maybe it's cause there are less people in that bracket so it gives me a better chance

yes, the GPS sailing has been good at getting people back into speed sailing, but i just think starboard and jp need to look at the market for beginners on a budget. We all learnt on the bomboras in the 90's. They were great boards and you could buy them for i think abit over $500. Why cant they bring them back? and make super wide boards out of the same pvc, plastic material, the bomboras were made out of and sell them to beginners on a budget, for 600 bucks with some fancy grafix? My first short board was a bombora and I paid 140 bucks for it second hand. brought it from a guy in rye. The next day went for a sail and got on me first plane and that was it, was hooked for life. It was a heavy board but still was alot fun to sail.

I think one smart thing tho starboard did, was invent the new iDO. It will be very interesting to see where that takes the popularity of our sport.
