maybe someone has a clue..I recently started using the 401 and a very receptive gps compared to the 201 problem is after I download to gpsTrackMaker doing an activity twice now such as running besides my track there is a "rouge" pt. which seems to be my residence. If I did a run(jogging) 2 kms. away and upload to any sports tracking website it creates a spurious spike because that point hooks up with the track even though it wasn't part of the activity. I tried everything deleting tracks before a satellite fix happens and the waypoint I created on my residence. The timestamp on that point always is the same as the starting time of two activities now. I have to go in to gpsTM and delete that point then upload. However, the track is not accurate as when the uploaded site slices off that spike but it leaves a miniscule spike trail which I guess is inevitable and leaves me with at least a 100meters and almost 1minute less on the distance and time. I tried running with both the 201 and 401 and same the former has a longer distance and time. Yesterday I noticed when I delete a previous track the saved data goes to 0% and for an instant reverts back to 1% without a satellite lock. I am not sure if that causes the problem. I had some opinion from a seabreezer but it would be good to post and get more opinions. Regards...p.s. Garmin sucks when it comes to support it's been more than a week now since emailing the U.S. company and their subsidiary in Taiwan

Yes checked JP's tracks, and the data starts at his residence about 20min before any speed/distance is recorded. There is then 20min of "0" before anything starts happening at the track.
Some how seems that the garmin wants to start from JP's place not from where he is.
Very weird, beyond my knowledge base.

thanks Decrep..since the 401 has a "jumpmaster and barometer" function my guess is it was intended to target the military..so if you were using one and about to go in a mission and reached your objective coordinates it can track you back to where you started which is that bugging track pt. just an opinion. Am still working on it.

well here's a real speed view of the tracks.

The old brain cells are a bit slow these days, and 95% of the time I use the card data from the GTs, that start a new file on power up.
But I've just realised, if you zeroed the GT internal data logger at home, turned the unit off, then traveled somewhere, turned the unit back on and went for a run, then turned the unit off. You'd have an internal data file just like Johno's.

So JP, do you still have the problem if you zero everything at the park, immediately before going for a run?

wow! holy spike...I wish I could attach gpsTM on to this site as well. I kind of figured it out Mike however you have to be right on the point where you plan to do the activity and not on the way to the site. So this morning I stopped at a point about 80mtrs. from the house and stood still and started deleting previous tracks. And all went well.

If you notice there is a gap in between the start and the stop of the run on the map page. I intentionally did that not going back to the same point to make sure. Bugger though I have to reset only on site..one of these days I'll do a "super" run and forgot to delete just before. What was Garmin thinking about? I still have to wait for their reply might be a glitch that can be fixed under warranty. Thanks for the information you sent Mike..your database has still gigabytes left of wisdom

I don't think it's a glitch Johno, the unit is just recording in a continuous file. It's up to you to seperate out the bits you want.
Probably the reason the 201 didn't do the same thing, is it's lack of sensetivity, couldn't get a satelite fix inside your home so recorded nothing.
The GT11/31 internal data logger does the same thing, it's one continuous file of everythibg it's recorded, it will give a similar file to your 402.
If we use that, the days session has to be seperated from the previous stuff.
The difference is the GT11/31's SD card's files, a new one is created every time the unit is switched on, so there is no problem of seperating files. The problem here is joining files together when your batteries are low and you turn off the unit while you have lunch.

Maybe there is a similar option somehow with the 401, "create new file at power up"
