I heard the bottom hole allows the leach and head to spill gusts, while the top hole helps hold the shape up there for maximum area in lighter wings.
I suspect B*&^% all, but I'm assured it does have an effect. The reasoning goes that the bottom hole allows the upper half of the sail to twist off more. But if you draw 2 lines to the tip, 1 from each hole, there doesn't seem to be much difference.
Try it and see, I've now got a sail with those 2 holes so first strong wind day, I'm going to try it.
Mine has 3 holes. But I only enjoy using the middle one.
Id like to try the bottom hole but I cant seem to thread my rope through it.
i use the bottom hole on bigger sails when it's blowing. it really opens the leach up and increases the twist and increases the wind range.
top hole all other times.
i am a fan!
I've always found the second hole from the back of the neck to be best......
.......... sorry should have read the whole thread I didnt realise we were talking about sails![]()

Lower hole in stronger winds, top hole for marginal conditions, look at the Neil Pryde RS6/RS rigging and tuning video it;s explained there.
had this disscussion with mk. surprisingly he disagreed with me.
[}:)]
i always used the top hole thinking it was a height thing. when i bought a new sail the instructions said the different holes were for leach tuning. maybe not the case for all sails but talking to one of the shop guys he had seen good results when using it for tuning.
i tied it and it made a definate difference.
back on track now.....
lucky my sails use high grade stainless. i'd hate to get rust stains around the hole! [}:)]
I'm quite tall, but I have never found boom height to be a problem when my sail is lying horizontal.
Also, my 5.4 sail only has one hole, I'm wondering whether I need to upgrade to a different model and experiment with the high/low wind aspect, but I'm just a beginner.
