Any tips for what to do when you just can't sail anymore?

my knees are shot, my back hurts and i can't clench my fists.

after weeks of 20-25 knot winds i don't reckon i can face another day on the water. today was once again "howling" sailed for 3.5 hours, last weekend was the same. i just lloked at the graphs and once again. it's green all week with forecasts of 25 knots every day.

maybe i'm getting old cause the body just doesn't recover as fast as it used to.

i am thinking it may be time to have a holiday. was thinking WA! or anywhere else where it doesn't blow day and night for months.

anti inflamatories (i don't konw if that's the spelling) such as iburofen.
i used it to kill pain with a sore wrist and foot. and i know some oldies that use it like it's smack and say you can't feel a thing.

either that or toughen up cup cake

A physio only product called "Flexall 454" ... rub that sh!t on the sore bits in the morning after a sail, by the time you get to the beach couple hrs later you won't even know you sailed the day before.

Anti inflammatories taken orally for long time is not good, but a bit of external like Voltaren gel on the joints a couple of times a week is the go

Yeah but at $150 the half hour it gets expensive after each and every sail

personally i'd prefer to be the pitcher . The office where i work just had a massage room built out the back for the staff. bloody expensive! $80 a rub

i'll grab myself some voltaren, a bottle of rum or "single malt" and have the letters htfu tatooed on my butt.

problem with the knee has been around since catching ross river fever years back. i get sore joints from time to time. found blackmores 8 hour release multi vitamins work a treat. gives me lots more energy compared to normal multi vitamins.

some good responses in there. cracked me up!

I dont see how going back and forth on flat water could get you that shot
A few years ago at Corros I sailed 5 days straight for 6 hours every day.
Sailed for 3 hours when the wind came in at 10am then eat and sleep ready for the 3 hour arvo sesh. Im getting tired just thinking about it
My holiday was ment for 7 days but I physically couldnt do another 2 more before I had to be back at work

Justin,

Get to the gym and get a properly designed program.

Like u I have suffered in the past from the signs of old age - nothing like a program to strengthen the muscles around the knees and the mid section. ( I dropped 15% body fat but no weight - sleep better, can eat more, have a bucket load more energy etc... and joint pain that was almost crippling is now reduced to a manageble level).

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES CONSTANT WORK FOR A NUMBER OF MONTHS Before the benefits become apparent DONT GIVE UP AFTER A FEW WEEKS WHEN PROGRESS SEEMS SLOW.

BTW - nice to see you today - had a nice sail at VP.

And a "T"

But in reality knitting would be to physicaly an excursion exertion, some of those balls of wool can get rather heavy

But suppose if he took up Kiting his mum could knit him a scarf for those cold sub 30ºC days

uh not really..it's more like 200pesos/hr. and with the exchange rate at 1ozzie$ to 38pesos equates to about 5 and whatever extras which is plus 5 again and it'll sure make a 'happy ending'[}:)]

Actually I was knackered last night too. Get a bit of wind. Don't know when to stop. Couldn't even manage one of Mark's Thai massages.

Either stop your bitching and man up, or i'll swap houses with you, we have had no wind for ages, i only dream of having sore hands from sailing too much. lol

no make the most of it, remember those winter no winds months, you would wish that you sailed more in summer once there here, sore or not get out there.

Actually after wavesailing for years and only ever sailing with just enough power as so many wavesailors do, I am finding I am getting stuffed pretty quick on the slalom gear.

6.5m+ sails in 20 to 25knts seems to take it out of me. And still would rather be in the surf, just sometimes don't have the time for the travel.

Oh, and Justin. Get a job in the city!!! that will take care of things during the week.

ah yes panda man but the sunny coast is looking good all week and i am off to the lake on saturday.......

DrJ, good to see you too. has been a while mate.

Aus301, sunday i used my 6.4 so i was well powered in the arvo.

I guess like most of the weekend warriors like myself i just need more time in the saddle. excercise for me IS windsurfing. other than that i am working or trying to find ways to go windsurfing.

and yes i gave up the smokes. well actually i fell off the wagon this weekend, but it has been a few months and i'm back on the wagon again today. apparently there is a board or a sail in it.

the problem with all of the wind of late is the few sore bones etc that just don't get time to heal, not complaining though. now i've had a day to recover i'm keen as again.

but i'll toughen up, get some voltaren and make the most of it becasue it only blows like this every 14 years or so. except next year. i read that next year will be windy again.

planning on making the most of it

Good luck with the smokes man, they're a bugger to kick.

Beware the three month crunch, get some nicotine gum, talk about it to friends.

It's been a year for me now
