The dreaded Wello Channel.... Sailing in avout 20knts of breeze, first run heading out, near the end of the beacon. Set about openning up for a NM and the board took off... several veeerrryy long chop hops and the the fin snapped.
It became the most 'awkward' crash of my life, happened so bloody quick, back foot stayed in the strap as the tail slid out, rig flung me forward
Result = snapped ACL....did not feel that bad at the time, sailed half way back then a friendly boatee gave me a lift....
6 weeks in a brace.... no fun

The strangest thing was it felt OK and not really sore untill the next day. I actually walked around quite that night.... in the morning was a VERY different story.... stairs became the nightmare of my life

early 80s, doing the volenteer thing on a kibbutz in israel, myself and a couple of the very lovely danish girls that were on the kibbutz too decided to hitch hike to the coast for a day at the beach. when we got there, there was a windsurf rental stand, and they were keen to give it a go. so i, being the expert, was going to show them how its done..

hmmm, kinda slippery deck though, but..
here, stand like this, one foot in front of the mast, one behind, grab the rope see, and just pull the sail out... whoa!
down i came, one foot on either side of the mast, full speed...right square

end of lesson..

but fortunately, the one girl was ,quite uh, kind hearted, and was able to nurse back to health..

july 2008, brittany, beautiful 25knts.

Brand new board (been 2 times on the water). Let's try some little jumps !

Jumped and jumped and jumped and ... landed on a rock

Result : sail OK, board destroyed and heel broken. I drove back to my house 12 kilometres away and asked my wife to bring me to the hospital...

1 month 1/2 in plaster

And another one 15 years ago :
playing in waves i broke my mast and landed on it. I felt a little pain in the back of my armpit but nothing too painful so I managed to get back to the beach (with the sail half bent) where my friends were waiting.

On my way back to the beach I was not feeling good : kind of flies in front of my eyes and the sail was heavier and heavier...
One of my friend asked me if I wanted to see a doctor ? What for, I was feeling quite well....
Wrong ! a piece of carbon was stuck in my skin and I was bleeding a lot
5 stitches and 3 weeks later I was back on the board.

Willy skipper, got hooked in while mid air! Landed fine still, but with mast between my legs. ouch

I have visions of Caption Comp 103 Mr. Spaggiari.

Smacked my face into my mast sometime ago in some really blown out conditions and ended up with a lip so fat someone mistook me for teapuhoo.

PS - Gestalt, I haven't been able to take you seriously since you changed your avatar to that damned cat

Oooooosh!! Nice one for the grandkids hehe

On holiday in lake Garda (italy) for my sisters wedding.
I had not windsurfed for a couple of years (turned to the dark side as a kiter) but decided to rent a formula board and full cambered 8m rig as the wind was light.
I some how managed to sail into the competition area while a big race was ongoing (by this point the wind had picked up to a healthy 20knts),just as I was thinking I was really cool for out sailing all of the world class competition I did a huge catapult and hit my upper thigh against the nose of the board. Wost pain ever and total paralysis of my leg.
After 5 minutes of floating to gain my composure I tried sailing in but could not put any weight on my leg (wind now blowing really hard offshore) so spent 30minutes trying to swim my gear the 50m back upwind to the shore, all in front of a huge spectating crowd (with commentator).
I could not walk unassisted for 4 days but felt a total wuss as all I had to show was a fist sized bruise and no breakages.

Saturday
Take off downwind for speed run..get new PB..
get tail slide / spinnout
Catapult
Break new carbon boom
Swim to shore
Walk of shame
Pack up go home..all good
Have shower and discover foot is bleeding BAD ,after sand is removed
Spend 20 minutes pulling out CARBON splinters from foot..
How I got my foot up to my neck whilst catapulting is beyond me

7 broken ribs and a punctured lung out the back of sprecks, speard by my best mate ,young gun and full of confidence ,thought i would pass him real close and give him a fright,,,He shilded lifted his nose and clipped me at 40kts,Armadad back to shore, and comforted by jenna d rosney, will never forget her comfiting eyez looking down at me while i sounded like micky mouse,i learned my lesson and when anyone gets to close to me messing about it scares the fk out of me. my old mate was right in shilding even though i would have made it<that ain t the point.
