i have a funny vulcan story, it's from about a year ago.

i was trying them a while back, no luck and still no luck on that front.

anyways, haircut had given me some tips so i tried one right on front of him. obviously i didn't listen to good.

i hit some chop, swivelled around and dug the nose in and catapulted in spectacular style.

it hurt!

i got to my feet and haircuts yelling out are you alright?

i said yep, and then asked what i did wrong.

hairy starts off his advice with,

when doing a forward loop you need to..........

i stopped him and explained i was trying a vulcan, he was silent and just looked at me.

p.s. 1 broken boom later

Years ago I took a sickie ( first & only time ) to go sailing at Jimmies Beach at Port Stephens in 35kts with a 2m SE swell running.I got some massive jumps but accidently hooked in on a gybe & got smashed into the boom..Luckily I was only a few feet from the land as even trying to pull the sail off the mast was almost impossible for the pain. I then had almost a 2hr drive home. The worst bit was I got back to work & had to tell them I hurt myself running into a door at home so I couldn't even get to brag about the sail..

Sailing in stormy conditions at Robe in southeast SA about 14 years ago, getting over some big whitewater and got all messed up in the air. Bailed out and ended up diving half onto the sail and dislocated my shoulder. Only realised when I went to swim for my rig and felt it pop back in. By the time I got back to the beach my arm was useless and I had to be helped out of my wettie. That night was the most pain I have ever experienced. I felt like I would have gone crazy if it didn't stop.

After about 2 weeks of trying duck gybes I nailed my first perfect one and came flying out planing faster than most of my carve gybes. After about 30 seconds of tarzan ululations I tried on opposite tack feeling rather too full of myself. Boom hit water, shoulder hit boom and just this once the boom didn't break. Sailed back with dislocated collar bone which popped back in while derigging. Had to drive whole way home in second as I couldn't use left arm. Never tempt huey to knock that smug smile off of your face.

ooh, knigit reminded me of another one. Missed the other side of the sail on a no hand gybe in shallow water and the clew hit the bottom, causing the head of the boom to smash into my face haha. Got a nice fat lip from that one.

I have visions of Caption Comp 103 Mr. Spaggiari.

Smacked my face into my mast sometime ago in some really blown out conditions and ended up with a lip so fat someone mistook me for teapuhoo.

Learnig to do pushies in 40kts, caught a gust mid air that twisted me in a bad direction, end up accelerating back down with the wind ontop of my sail. Tried to ditch the rig but did it to late and copped the boom in the throat. Ended up punching my Adams apple out the side of my throat then knocking myself out as the boom diflected up to my jaw. And snapped by thumb. I'll tell you feeling the lights going out on you in the surf is the worst feeling I've ever had. Luckily Jason found me in the shorey face down and limp and got me out ( thanks Jase). I stuck to backies from then on

Sailing at Goolwa lake a few years back, flat out down towards barrages, water got shallow very quick, fin dug into sand, I stopped, landed hard on my boom, bad bruising on hip, managed to sail back with only one side of the boom attached to the sail......

Also managed to crack ribs 8 days into a 21 day Maui holiday last year,

Also managed to crack two ribs paddle surfing at Beachport in monster 1 foot waves

I am so hard core!

I agree. It's funny that it should make any difference, but it does.
The B&W art pics were sort of formal and gave you an air of authority.

I generally break a rib most years - out for six weeks.

Used to do it skiing (falling on my stock), now that I'm back into windsurfing its the catapult that ends up on the boom end that does it.

Not looking forward to that ray or cobbler, either.

i got a couple more,

i don't want people to think i can actually do these moves. my injury come from "NOT" having the ability....

years back my friends were all doing backloops so i figured i'd give it a go also. i think i got half way round. landed on my boom face first. slightly concussed and bleeding.

the next one was a few years after that. tried a forward at the lake in very shallow water. did an endo, snapped the nose of my board, broke the boom clean in 2 and hit my head on a rock. concussion.

sailing at wello on the dreaded southern side. was pinching up the channel when i hit the reef, catapulted over the bars and landed feet first onto the reef resulting in a very deep cut to the bone of my big toe. quick trip to the docs for some stitches and 6 months of not walking properly.

was gybing at VP in the swell and some how fell off the back of the board. landed knee first onto the deck. actually that one brought tears to the eyes. no sailing for 3 weeks and lots of pain.

funny thing is padi was present at 2 of those. i blame him and no longer sail with him.

p.s. haha....i like the cat! it cracks me up. but it's a very authoritarian cat that prefers not to be taken too seriously. should see my dog

pps. dan that's intense.

ppps. probably only vulcan i'll ever know also choco.

a little bit on the stupidity side and off topic but last season in haste to hit the water i didn't check if the top luff seated rightfully on the mast leaving a big gap on the mast extension so i poked my finger feeling if there was space in between..yes there was so i nudged the mast while pulling the luff sleeve with my finger and suddenly got sandwiched..shouted my pain but no-one was around till about 2mins later when the coco-juice gatherer was really wondering why i was in pain when there seemed to be no reason except my finger inside..he slowly[}:)]called 2persons below to help and every inch they moved the sucker i thought i was going to lose it..they dismantled boom, extension and the whole bit by bit pheeewww a bloodshot finger but still sailed the rest of the afternoon

For the first time ever in 20+ years, I had to be pulled out on the committee boat at a comp this year. Only time ever.

U-joint exploded on me, leg was caught in a funny way through the boom - couldn't believe my badluck - such a stupid accident when I've spent my life trying to break me. From the pain, really thought the leg was broken, but was just one big mamma bruise. (The PWA guy who was laughing at me... dislocated badly not long after - not funny)
Still icing the friggin' thing 2 months later.

around 5 years ago i pulled a muscle in my neck while turning over in bed, did not think much about it at time as was only an a slight annoyance in terms of pain.

i went sailing with my largest board, sail + fin as wind was light.

sailing on a reach across the river i got a 5 second or so cramp in my neck, words cannot describe the pain i felt. i bailed out immediately then tried to compose myself. while trying to waterstart my neck went under the cold water and again i got another cramp in my neck.

i then managed to get on board and sailed back to carpark at lucky bay.at sandbank i couldnt sail over it due to size of fin. started to walk around sandbank and force of holding up sail triggered another 2/3 cramps of terrible pain.

at this stage i was scared to move even a foot for fear of another attack.

i held the left/side of my neck with my right hand firmly. this pressure + heat applied stopped any more cramps. i walked very slowly[no rig] around sandbank.

norman the pilot somehow got my rig back.thanks again.

waited around an hour and a half for someone to de/rig my gear.

i had not had a cramp for around 2 hours since on sandbank, although was still in appalling pain.

in trying to get into car another 5 second cramp in neck, was crying i think at this stage. remember john commenting at this latest cramp that this wasnt good.

i somehow managed to drive myself home. went to royal perth, they did full check/up then said nothing wrong, just a pinched nerve.

not had cramp in neck since, intensity of pain will remember forever.

cramp in neck , intensity of pain will remember forever.
With my neck & shoulder problem I've had a few of those in the luxury of home .I had the advantage of having my partner who was a massage therapest on hand to " unspasm it" so I could move. Not fun..certainly can't imagine trying to get back from a sail with it!

bailed out on a backloop at Lowers at Kanaha years ago and expected the board and rig to blow away from me.....nup, board decided to land on my head, well my cheek to be exact. I remember thinking, sheeite that hurt and gritted my teeth to the feeling of a very sore jaw. Felt my cheek and saw I had some blood on my hands afterwards. Grabbed my gear to sail in and managed to stand on some friggin sharp coral so cut my feet up nicely too. Sailed in and was told I only had a small cut on my cheek so didn't think too much more of it. Went back to the Banana Bungalow where I had a shower and blew my nose (like you do) and felt my cheek suddenly balloon up!!! Dried off, went to see the girlfriend who looked at me like I was the elephant man....so off I went to the hospital where x-rays showed I had a nicely cracked cheekbone and I had managed to blow all my mucous from my sinus through it when I blew my nose in the shower. I also needed 5 stitches for the coral cuts but I declined as I still had 5 days sailing left and I didn't want to be out of the water. I tried on various Gaths to protect my head but I just couldn't convince myself to buy one as it made me look more dorky than I already was. Hadn't hit my head since until about 2 years ago when I got lifted and slammed at Palm Beach by a feral gust.
