there are a lot of guys that have an excess of skill and can nail the moves.

there are a lot of guys with a gopro and no skill. (me)

thought it would be fun to strap on the gopro and do a stupid move.

try a loop, a freestyle move, just go out in the surf and get smashed when you know you shouldn't.

next session I'm going to try something I know I can't do and capture it's inglorious result on film.

I encourage everyone else to do the same or post your efforts to date.

So where is the video of your move?

He said he's going out next session. probably waiting for daylight so the camera can get a decent shot. Wayneker.

It sounds like an injury waiting to happen... but please - continue for the amusement of the rest of us.

For added stupidity he could do it at night?

Can I just show the prescriptions for medication I'm still using to get over a stupid loop attempt I did around 1990? That makes #1 on my personal list of "stupid move of the quarter-century".

Jumped on the first of two closely-space waves, tucked, and then the nose of the board hit the following wave and drove my knee upwards into my face. Bone splinters very close to the forebrain, still some tiny gaps in the front of the skull apparently, and any sniffle turns into an infection that lasts for a couple of months. Stayed conscious, somehow.

Could have been lots worse (I've lost family and people I knew to sporting accidents) but when people say "go for it" they sometimes forget that going for it can also mean that you spend a lot of time on the sidelines for the rest of your life, or worse.

I still wouldn't mind trying to learn looping, now that training techniques have developed from the old idea of "just tuck and go hard into a full forward", but I confess I get scared. One other thing is that it showed that a normal helmet, which only protects some parts of the skull, can leave you quite vulnerable.

Ooh that looks nasty..
That's why I don't go out in the surf anymore these days. Getting munched ( in surf nowhere near as big as that) used to wreck me when I was young and fit..I 'd have to hook in and go for a run out the back to recover.. It would kill me these days..
Chris 249 - I was tempted but I never tried looping back then as I figured I couldn't afford the gear breakage and wasn't covered well enough by a health fund..

The older I get, the less I bounce when things go wrong. Further when I do get injured it takes longer to recover. I still have a sore middle back from a big off at Windfest last March. That being said, I still get a big thrill from trying something new and pulling it off. For me, the key is to choose the level of risk that I'm happy with.

Nasty. It's nice to be warned about these things. Spin loops I think are safer.

I hear you.
I support a family, and if I don't work I don't get paid.
Luckily I spent most of my younger (single) years doing all the extreme stuff (climbing, whitewater, remote expeditions, etc), now I'm happy with a safer buzz, (blasting back and forth), but enjoy it just as much.
But if you're young and made of rubber, you have no excuse. Go for it!!!!
