I was a windsurfing instructor in the Greek Islands (Naxos to be exact) for 2 summer seasons.... was there from mid may to end of sept, both 2006 and 2007.....
Was the most amazing experience ever... made life long friends and windsurfed in some of the strongest wind I have ever sailed in... 35knts +..... I still think about it everyday....
Will be life changing!!!! enjoy :):):):)
hmmmmmm....
I've heard there can be wind but I wouldnt risk it if your number one reason to go is to look for wind....
There is usually the 'meltemi' (very similar to a seabreeze) which blows in from start of june to mid/end sept.... Mid july to end of aug is packed because all the greeks and europeans flood the islands, so unless your keen on sailing with 500 people out on the water and not having any gear you want waiting at hand, try and steer clear of these times.......
late june and late aug/early sept is the best limited people/good chance of wind ratio...
But again it all depends which island you go to i guess............... ![]()

Hey Mucksy
will be in Naxos ( Plaka )for about 5 days windsurfing before going sailing around the Ionian islands beginning of July...will I be able to cope ????
Hey kiwibro,
Thats exactly the beach that I worked at in summer '06 and '07... Plakawatersports is the place to go... wicked gear, great people with good advice... Ask them for the famous 'Michael Powell' (me) and they should laugh their asses off... Its a father/son business... Kostas is the older and Stef is the younger rock at the station... both great guys!
Plaka is the most beautiful beach on Naxos, in my opinion... The water is crystal clear! Great sailing spot... The wind is side-off shore which makes it perfect for beginners close to the beach and great for more experienced who want to go out to find more wind.... When the wind picks up it DEFINATELY picks up as the winds funnel thru the channel between the west coast of Naxos and the east coast Paros... Lots of fun...
There is also a cheap camping place 200m from the station called maragas camping... Its right on the beach and Its quite cheap but make sure you book early to secure a spot...
anyway check out
- plaka-watersports.com/ for the windsurfing station
- www.maragascamping.gr/ for cheap quality camping
hope that helps

but regarding your 'will I be able to cope' question, I have no idea of your windsurfing ability...
If your wondering if you will be able to cope with the insane fun levels alongside perfect weather and wind most days then I would probably have to say yes because its AWESOME!! ![]()

yeah that comment was a bit tongue in cheek.....
am staying at Athina ($$$$) but if I don't have a job to come back too ( mining boom death throws) then may go back and stay at the camp and sail my brains out for a couple of months and then come home for the WA summer session.
what is the best way to hire gear by the day , book ahead..if I mention your name would i get a ~mates rate~
am looking forward to it......thanks for the feedback
Hey Sflack
Just got back to the UK after living in Syd for last 18 months... Aim to get out to Vass and Tarifa in southern spain this summer... Will check your blog... Good wind in the UK at the mo - in fact there's nothing here other than wind, gales and more wind...
I expect you'll be meeting lots of pome sailors out there as windsurfing tourism is massive over here...Have fun...
kiwi bro,
the best way to rent windsurfing gear is pay for the maximum time you want to sail instead of day by day... If there is wind and you want to sail alot you will be able to sail so much more for your money... you can buy per hour up to 4 hrs then you start getting hours cards (5,10 and 20)... the hours cards enable you to sail when ever you want anyday until you make up the time... very flexible...
unfortunately your chance are slim of getting any discount but give it a go.... Mention my name (michael powell) and you'll never know..
have a chat with them... they'll surely sort you out...
Mucksy
Thankyou for that..always good to know the lie of the land (so to speak)
Was wondering how to get the best value,
Oh one more thing...
On Naxos is it worth getting a rental car to get around or is the public transport system good to get a bit of sightseeing done around the island?
perhaps after that we can let sflack have his thread back
cheers
