hello everyone I am e female beginner trying to decide which board to get. Am looking at either a 2008 scross mc or starboard go 139-140L. I weigh 55 kg and have experience sailing catamarans and can stand on a surf board. I have had about % goes on a windsurfer and can go straight and tack depending on the conditions. I looked at the scross as it is lighter and I wanted something I could cart around and set up easily on my own but am concerned that it might be too much of a high performance board on to get going?

I think your prob better off starting on the GO and moving to somthing like a scross later. The go well be more stable and can be knocked around abit more.

I would suggest the S cross because when you have got good on it and want to get a smaller board for high wind you still have a very good high performance board for light wind days, but others may have a different opinion.[believe me that when you become addicted one board is never enough unless you live in WA]

May be Vando is right as I see that the Cross is the mc version which is the light weight one I think.Sorry.

The smaller sizes in the 08-09 Go range (up to 155 I think) are the same shape as the Futura's, so also could be considered performance orientated. Bit of extra weight due to the tougher construction of course but my 2008 133 Go is no slouch!

wow thanks everyone for the quick response, thats fantastic. So if the scross mc is out, would an exocet scross (not mc) or starboard go be better or are they much the same?

This is actually the other way round, the MC version is the tougher construction but not as light as the Pro version.

Some "standard" SCross are still available, this was the lightest construction in the range before they went to the Pro version.

Hope this helps.

My mrs learnt on a 2006 Starboard Go 139. She's 50kg and had no prior sailing experience. Plenty stable enough for her and it gets along quite nicely when the wind picks up. If she had prior sailing experience we probably would have got the next size down in the Go range. Her only dislike of the 2006 GO is the anti-slip coating on the edges that used to take a bit of skin off the shins/legs in the early days when falling off. The current model GO's look to have a full EVA deck so wouldn't have this problem.

Her favorite addition so far has been a Gun 3.7 with RDM mast because it's such a light setup.

If you have access to test each board, try them both.

At 55kg, you are pretty light, so a 130l is huge -> you might find that you could quickly move onto something smaller which is more inline with your bodyweight.

Just wondering if the really light weight options which are now available might be a good alternative ? Nonplaning beginners in lightwinds are not going to break a full carbon mast, and a complete rig feels like it weighs nothing at all.
Must be good for learning foot steering and such

indeed -> if you dont weigh as much, you can get away with skinny booms, shorter masts, lighter-weight sail materials, lighter board construction, etc. Given the reputation of 100% carbon masts breaking under normal load, a lighter sailor might get away with not breaking them.

Thanks for the info, have tested the scross mc had to be a bit more careful where I put my feet than the big hire boards but could get going... apart from that, as I have only been a few times not surewhat to look for. At my level as long as I can go straight and tack I think I could have fun on anything. I guess the thing I am worried about is will the more high performance board cause me to do any unplanned somersoults or is it much of a muchness? A lighter rig sounds like a great idea I will look into it. Thanks

I vote for a JP Xcite ride - about 130litre no bigger. They're a nice wide board to learn on and very stable, however they also perform really well when you get better. I learnt/still learning on a 130l and I weigh about 95kgs so it will be big but will be a great light weather board for you to hang onto.

They are really strong and will take plenty of beating from catapults etc.
