swoosh, the ability of a sail to twist off determines the sails' wind range. If you are looking for a sail that's good in gusty conditions, you do want one that has a stable draft i.e. camber inducers.

I have a 4.0 that I have taken out in 30 knots a few times recently and it is a dream to sail. I don't even notice the gusts.
I find that rather amusing in that I can comfortably hold onto a 6.0 at 30 knots and won't go to a 5.0 until well into the 30's. At that point I am using a prototype Gaastra Manic which I never thought was exceptionally good in gusts. However, I do have two race sails I use in high winds. One is a very old N.P. double cambered dacron 5.1 which has no twist off characteristics and the other an Arrows race 5.6 which has a ton of battens and a loose leech. Both are excellent in their range.

You need a wind meter.

2 weeks ago we had 35-39 knots all afternoon (Gov Bureau of Meteorology weather stations are 30ft off the ground so it was probably a bit less on the water.)
Normal sized guys were on 4.2 and many people did not sail.

At 97kg (240lb or something for you) I was on 85L waveboard with thin rails and 4.2 and it was about right.
The only people holding down 5.0 in the mid 30's are big big fellas on speed boards and very flat water. I am on my 5.0 in a constant 25 so you not egtting on it until "well into the 30's" sounds like bvllsh!t to me.
Your Manic will not do it for more than a few minutes as the draft shift and general overpowered state would just be too much.
6.0 in a real solid 30kn is a bit like the fishermens' one that got away stories.

Caveat: unless you are at 8,000ft altitude where the air is a a lot thinner

Recently purchased the s1 5.0 and 5.6 - been riding poisons for a few years - the power difference isn't that great - just feel different and they are just amazingly light and handle sweetly and so easy to depower when bearing away and power up again easily - I thought they may not suit my weight (86kg) but I must say I luv em and will be replacing my Manic 4.2 with a S1 4.3 when cashed up - if your overpowered on the 5.0 its a straight progression to a 4.2 - just another option.

Your opinions are narrow and your attitude a commonplace, arrogant one based on self centered ignorance and shared by many sailors. All in all, it isn't intelligent or correct. First of all, 100 kg equals 220 lbs. Second I have an excellent windmeter and use it often. I probably weigh 20 lbs more than you. The rule of thumb regarding sail size and sailor weight would be for every 20 lbs difference in weight, 0.5-0.6 sq. meter difference in sail size. Futhermore, I'm probably stronger than you in addition to being older. Most windsurfers don't really have a clue about what sailors bigger than they are can do. Like you, they only care about themselves.

But you're not a female who weighs under 60 kg. If I took out a 6.0 in 30knots I just might end up in Alice Springs.
You should qualify your posts. How was I supposed to know your vital stats?

Hang on CosmicRubbySwiftSailorBlowBoostCharlie -

[b]you
didn't post your weight when you claimed to not even bring out the 5.0 until it is mid 30's
and then you tell off Windxtasy because she didn't post her weight when talking about what size she used

Trolls nowadays I dunno.... you guys are just so inconsistent now

I wonder if any of these fine folks would enjoy a peek at you....
