reading a post about drying out the phone with rice, reminded me of my brain wave the other day!
I wonder if you bagged a board with say, 10kg of rice [not sure if white or brown works better], if that would dry out a board with water in it?
food for thought, or a lot of rice to eat after
nigel
I believe it works well with phones because the rice attracts Asian people who are smarter and better with fixing electronics.
I don't think it would as capillary action holds the water in the interstices in styrofoam very well.
Not the same as drops of water on a plastic phone case / circuit board etc.
??????
I tried something I'd never done before a few days ago. connected a long hose to the bung, coiled most of it up inside a black bag, and connected to the compressor adjusted down as far as it would ago, (less than 1 psi I think) there was a big hole where I'd removed the damaged sandwich underneath a rear foot pad, so I wasn't worried about blowing the bottom off. I had absorbent material in the hole to suck out any moisture blown it's way.
I couldn't get any air flow through the board, but the compressor kept running for ages, when it finally stopped I could hear the air escaping at the bung. Turns out the longish solid section of pipe attached to the bung had enough sideways leverage, for the weight of the hose to roll it.
End of experiment!
But I think it has potential, I just have to put the bungs in stronger!
Theoretically they aren't under any load, so I just bog them into the board, hasn't been a problem before this.
I think that salt from the sea water in the board would be more hydrophilic than the rice, so you wouldn't get the board dry in a closed system using rice as a dessicant.
True that, you'd be better off taping a bag of salt onto a crack or hole in the board.
Whoa, now I got myself thinking, that might be worth a try when trying to dry out a board when the sun won't shine.
then maybe wrap the board in black plastic, use that silica stuff you get in packaging for electronics that absorbs the humidity, leave in sun....
or just buy a vacuum set up :-))
Thinking a bit more about it, maybe Rice Bubbles would work. Just on the basis that they have more exposed surface area for water molecules to latch onto, just like twigs are easier to set on fire than logs are, because of the larger surface area, plus the water that is naturally part of the rice gets expelled when the rice gets heated up to make the Rice Bubbles.
Have you considered popcorn?

i feel an independent test should be performed. Thinking how the 2 could be combined.
with Sparky s active iminagation running at Mach 5, something should be presented.
It actually works well when you put it in the vent hole to drain
Have you considered popcorn?
Yes, often in front of a movie, though my preference is cheese & bottle of red. But then I need to dry out after, where I find placing several warm rice bags around my body completely useless, but comforting.

I would be more tempted to collect old, unwanted large volume FSWs and advertise them on the "free stuff WA thread". When Mark Australia inevitably turns up, I would get him to fix my board.

Why I don't eat shusihi
Get a sponge, wrap in cling film with a small hole, put some rice there, see if it works (it won't)
Heat and surface area are the only way to make this work, you can either pump air through the board, or cut a reasonable size hole and leave in a warm dry environment....

You know where I am dude
BTW I need a powerpoint changed from a single to a double so let's talk....
