i have a 5.8 northsail around 2000 model and i have trouble getting planing in moderate wind, would a newer the same size make much differance
If the sail was used a lot I would say probably.
Pretty much all sails will stretch over time resulting in the sail loosing performance.
Moderate winds.... I'd use a 7.4m or 6.6m sail in moderate winds up to 20 knots. Perhaps it's the size of the sail that is more important.
Generally sails are getting flatter and have more twist as time progresses so a new 5.8m may not help while a bigger sail may.
Only if the new one is red or has go-faster stripes on it
Whats the trouble that stops you planning ?
Just raw power or stability or control ? Got other sails that are OK ?
Logic says deep drafted sail designed for power will have more power than a flat sail designed for control.
A new sail would probably feel nicer, but I doubt the same style, just a newer model, would take you from non-planning to rocket ship with the same board in the same wind.
