Nice photo Mike. Did you make any of those boards on the roof? Did you use to be able to drive to the point? Or did the track end about where the carpark is now?
Who's Ian

Given a guess, Id say young Mr Cairns is the blond haired bloke in orange shirt.
Greenroom, if you really dont know, Ian Cairns was one of Oz's best short board surfers. One of the pioneers of this country's dominance of surfing. Started up the Bronzed Aussies with Peter Townend and Mark Warren. Cheyne Horan later joined.

And the prize goes to ka43, well done that man!!!

Thanks guys for the appreciative comments, I sometimes wonder if I'm just booring every body with this ancient stuff.

And Greenroom, undoubtedly one or more of those boards was mine, but don't ask me which now.
The cool guy in sunnies on the bonnet, was my partner in crime Bob Gardiner, so it's likely there were a couple of "West Coast Surfboards" on the van.
And yep you could drive to the point, but the last section was boggy. the photo is at the end of the firm stuff, we transfered the boards from the other vehicles to my van, sat the extra guys on the tailgate, and they hopped off and pushed if I started to get bogged.
The van had "fatties" on the back, so went thru the sand a bit better

What was the white car behind your FC?
Looks like a panel van? like an HGTK? All depends on the year of the photo? I'm guessing the photo was at least taken after 1963?
You said it was 4/5 years old when you bought it?
Did you know that the 500,000th holden built was an FC!? The 1 millionth was an EJ.
FC new was worth $2220/1110 pounds.
I had an HG wagon and new they were $3200. I paid $3500 for mine. Damn I got ripped off and it was 30 years old! But I made up for it and sold it for $7000

Greenroom, not sure about the white van, may have been an EH, what was the one after that HC? I traded the FC on a 186S HK wagon mid 68 (the new girlfriend wouldn't be seen dead in the old van, the things you'll do eh??).
By the look of the boards, (heavy "V" at the back) the photo was after the 66 Eastern states trip, I think that puts it late 67.

PR, I've uploaded a couple more from pics in the computer I've scanned from old slides.
There's and a heap more B&W photos somewhere. If I come across them I'll scan them in.

here's me on the nose.

And here's an earlier shot of the van at our Margaret River clubhouse.

It amazes me that you guys could even carry those boards to the beach, let alone paddle out and surf them. Especially at places like main break.

Must have been wild times, i was always told i was born 20 years too early would have loved to have been around at the time.

We must arrange a bbq down your way De'crep with Hardie n Elmo sometime would be great to sit around with a few beers and hear your tales of the past with the kids running around.

Anyway wind looks like its pickiung up i'm off......

Yes they were heavy pre 67 they were made to kneel on, (didn't have the weight + 10-20 litres formula back then, we just made then big)
And they had 2 layers of 10oz glass top and bottom. We had no leg ropes back then so you had to watch the loose ones in the soup, they could do some damage if they hit you!
You can still see my knee bump in the photo of me on the nose, and that board and the one before were too thin to paddle kneeling effectively. Some surfers even avoided nasho call up due to the size of their knee bumps!

But we were in awe of the first surfers, mate and I were asked to carry Duke Kahanamoku's board to the beach at the 66 Coolangatta Australian titles. It was solid timber 8' 6" long and about 2' wide, weighed a ton!!!! didn't even have a fin! yet the Duke could paddle it out with a young lady passenger and lift her to his shoulders once on a wave.

Decrep,
No helmet, no leggie, no wettie, no rashie, no proper okinui boardshorts,(just boxershort underwear),
it's near enough to nude surfing.
Shocking!
Shame!

Well I was young then and didn't know any better, that's why my skin is falling apart now.
Just don't show your kids, don't want to set a bad example!

What a blast you must have had Decrepit?
Was it crowded in the water back then?
Im not sure but the EH didnt come in a panel van?
the tail end looks like an HK T or G?
but if you say the photo was late 67 it couldnt be one of those as they started the HK in 68
The car could be (if its a holden) EK or J, HD or R? anyway nice photo
Wish I was there

No where near as much as it is today, but a good day at a popular break could still draw crowds. Triggs Point being an example. The waves around Margarets and Dunsborough where much better, no locals that I know of, just Bunbury & Perth guys, so it was fairly easy to get a break to yourself if every where was working.
Could even find a "secret spot" or 2 that not many others knew about.

They believe that only 6000 De Loreans exist. The DMC-12 with the gull wing doors is a classic! It came out with a brushed stainless steel body. Famous on BACK TO THE FUTURE! Being built in Ireland for the American market they were left hand drives. Not too popular in the UK so only 4 De loreans were ever produced with right hand drives. I have one of them in my garage... NOT!

So could you surf decent size waves on those boards? It must have been full on dropping in on a double overhead bone cruncher at somewhere like North point.....

Great tales de'crep any more photos there you could share??

Awesome new photo Decrep.

Love the image of the 2 guys on the wave with out the hassle

Nowadays that would end up as a punch up on the beach

Had a few "Party waves" when a mate came down from Perth again, Great when a few people can appreciate a wave at the same time without the selfish hassle.

Bring on the Party Wave call

Alby

More photos please

Yep, just uploaded a shot of main break
www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=2581

People like Murray Smith were getting tubed at South point in the mid 60s, he had the reputation of breaking more boards than anybody else. (still no legropes)

But in the early 60s I can remember a group of us just sitting at the end of North point watching huge perfect tubes just marching in, none of us were game to be the first one out. I think I first surfed it fairly big about 67, it was still on a 9' board but we'd refined them a bit by then, the technique was to start walking forward on the inside rail thru the bottom turn, couldn't afford to stall down the back.

OK this is my oldest surfing photo, my first board fresh out of the shed.

www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=2590

Got the plan from a library book, front and tail rocker was just sawn out of the 4" blank, virtually 3 flat sections. Fin was a solid piece of jarrah/karri marine plywood. Not only did I need the old man to take me to the beach, I also needed his help to carry it!
