does anyone know whether a ka rdm 370 mast will be compatible with a 2008 severne blade ?
have been using a standard 400 pryde x3 mast but think its a bit stiff in the bottom..the lower batton does an s-bend type thing when sail rigged..i can reduce downhaul to correct this but then the leech tightens up..any thoughts please
maybe try reduce batten tension? Not sure really, I'm sure someone has a better idea here.
But yeah severne recommend rdm masts for all their wave sails.

Hi Kevkev,
The KA 370 should be ok. I've only measured up a couple of their 400 masts and they were a little stiff overall, and tended more towards flex-top than ours. But not out of the ball-park.
If the bottom batten is s-curving, it can be fixed by replacing it with a stiffer taper on the foot batten. (We could send you one).
But I wouldn't recommend it - this softness does you a lot of favors when it's 4.0 weather... Check out what it's doing when you're sailing it. It should fill out to the correct flying shape with minimal pressure on the rig. This is a lot more important than how it looks when on the beach.
Ben.
Ben;
im fairly sure that the 1st panel/batten filled out ok when i was planing but was pretty ballistic here in the weekend( wellington) so probably wasnt paying too much attention to that..
what are your thoughts on using the std 400 X3 MAST ?.
To get the leech to open( on the beach when rigging) the 1st batten does the s-bend thing..should i just downhaul as best as poss and assume that the lower section of the sail will pop out ok ??
or would it pay to get a 370cm mast(this is the only sail i would need it for so was trying to avoid this if at all possible ...but if i have to then i will) ...rdm or std ???
thanks for your time.
cheers kevin
The 4.0 would definately work a lot better on the 370 RDM. How often do you use it? If it's a once a year sail then maybe the 400 would do, but a 370 will make the ballistic conditions seem way less out of control.
RDM's are really the only way to go if you're looking at purchasing a new mast for anything smaller than 6.5 in my opinion. (Race sails excluded!) More durable and easier to manage. But not all RDM's are created equal...
