Welcome back Mikey!!

the old skate you remember is pretty bulky compared to the current models, and i'm sure it wouldn't take you long to adapt to the newer short shapes

if its any help, i loved the 2008 JP freestyle 99litre, and love the JP 2012 freestyle 99 (although I've owned them for a year, I'm not such a fan of the JP 2009, 2010, 2011 freestyle models). the 2012 model feels so short and throwabout compared to the 2008 and is my favourite yet. I think JP 2012 is currently the shortest dedicated freestyle a manufacturer has ever built??

You will slide and spin with older or newer boards. Difference with older 2009 and down) and newer
Is the ability to turn and jibe with the newer models. Since pro must take production boards, advanced trick needs turnability, so lately it's less a big soapy ride.
But both era can do sliding trick like vulcan, spock, grubby, willy skipper etc.
