Hi Nick,

Whilst I'm not 17 yrs old, I am almost exactly your height and weight. I have just started formula last year and use a 9.8m sail and get planning about the same time when most of the heavier guys get planning with 11m sails. If you go much smaller than this you will not point very high in the marginal winds. I use this sail from anything over 8kts to around 15kts.

Look for a sail around 9.5-10.0 to be your main sail.

Cheers
David

HI Nick,

Dave is in the money with 9.5 to 10. Don't go too small as you won't get up and going. There is a big difference between 8.5 and 9.5 in planing power and pointing ability particularly in a fleet.

Sam.
