Hi, I'm buying a new mast but I don't know which to buy.My wife and I are learning, we can plane and we're practicing carve gybes, but the thing is , we have budget for one new mast. 430 or 460 ?. mi wife weighs 52 kg and i weigh 80 and we catch winds around Sydney.what do you reckon? which mast would be more useful? thanks
I'd recommend a 460. You could probably rig a sail from 6m up to 7.5m, giving you quite a large wind range, more time on the water in lighter winds, etc. I'm in a similar situation and use both my 6m and 7.5m which I rig on the one 460 mast. I go out in anything from 12 knots to 22 knots. I'm 80kg's and use a 126litre board. Hope that helps.
What size sails and boards![]()
430 would be a better size for your wife (this is a guess based on her weight). If you are using sails from 4.7-6.5 sqm, a 430 would be best for you also. If you are both using sails from 6-7.5 sqm a 460 would be better.
2 second hand masts![]()
I think you'd be better getting more of everything (second hand) as long as it is compatible and in reasonable condition. Gear between 3 and 5 years of age is cheap and will perform well. This way you and wifey will be covered for more conditions and can spend more time on the water and less time on the beach waiting!
dude you cant just go buy any mast, you have to buy one that fits your sail. check out your sail first then go from there..
It all depends what sail range you are using. In WA it's rare for people to have anything over 6m, with most peeps sail range 4m - 5.5 where you can get away with a 4 and/or 430. I'm guessing your wife won't be using 6m+ sails? I'd go for a 430 and with an extension you could use a 6m sail, depending on brand/model etc. Also with the mast, it doesn't necessarily have to be the one suggested by the sail manufacturer, as long as it has the right % of carbon, giving it the right amount of stiffness for that sail.
I've already got second hand 4.8 and 6.0 sails and I am thinking of getting a 5-5.5 sail, I also got 120 lts. board, but I just move to sydney and I don't know the wind conditions here. knots?
./......I want to buy everything but this is not a cheap sport.
So What do you reckon? a mast for Sydney's wind?
probably a 430 would fit all those sails, make shore there all the same kind of sail, like wave or freeride, you can use a wave mast in a wave sail, but you wouldn't want to use a race mast in a wave sail.
Sorry edleo2002 if I mislead you. I thought you where asking more so what mast, and therefore, what sail range you would be wanting for a intermediate surfer in average Sydney winds. To sail more often I'd go with the large sizes. Your probably better off asking a local, or getting advice at a local store.
edleo2002,
I'd say 430 for sure. With your wife weighing in at 52kg, you would be using smaller sails, and I guess a 430 would fit your existing sails. You will not want to use a 460 in the 4.8m, or the 5.3 that you plan to buy, and with an extension would make the 430 it fit your 6.0m. Also, given your wife's light weight, she would probably be better off with a 430 in the 6.0m sail anyway.
I weigh 65kg, and sail in Sydney, and my most commonly used sails are 4.7, 5.3, 5.9 and 6.6, and I can use a 430 mast in all of them.

Whats the difference between a wave mast and a standard mast? does it really matter if you use a wave mast with slalom sails?
akhawk,
Wave masts have a smaller diameter, and therefore a thicker wall section to achieve the same bend stiffness. The thicker wall section makes the mast stronger, but also a little heavier.
Generally, wave masts are fine in other sails, but with a slalom sail, I'm guessing you have cams, which probably need the right size mast to rotate around.
