You didn't get 304 stainless did you ?

Doesn't 304 corrode in salt water ? Especially if you screw them into brass.

I am sure you need 316 grade to not corrode ??

Nah ideally 408, but don't know where you get them.

From working on sea water plants I can tell you 316 isn't that brilliant, I know there is different qualities.

408 is speced for sea water

I had this question from the local stainless supplier. I ended up buying some 304 and some 316. The price difference was too much for me.

The screws are only in the brass insert for a day at a time, so I doubt there will be much corrosion if any. On the other hand, I have used zinc plated steel a few times, and they don't take too long to corrode at all. Usually in my sail bag after a few days, but I would never leave them in a fin unless I never wanted to get it out.

I brought some 6mm zink plated barrel nuts from Bunnings about $3.50 for 4 nuts , used them in one fin and so far so good after 2 months, even if you use them as a quick replacement there better than nothing

chocko thanks for sharing , my box of goodies arrived today and a good match for the zink coated barrel nuts, just have to see which will be the first to corrode first
