hi
concerning to buy a new wave carbon boom with RDM adapter, point7
almost no one uses SDM masts these days, worth it?
better a dedicate RDM boom, dont you?

Most booms use an adapter, really don't notice it if you just leave it in.

yes, probably is not noticiable, but im wonder why many brands still offer it,specially in short lenghts, almost nobody uses a SDM masts on waves, maybe there are better reinforced!,i dont know..,of course some brands have dedicate RDM head,duotone,severne...,but they are not on my budget!

Tooling for a boom head is very expensive, at the same time the windsurfing market is very small. To invest in a specialized head that only works with certain sizes of boom is rarely worth it. Of course some have done it, but they will hope for many years from the design & that is risky if something new comes along & supersedes, or the design ends up not being very good & needs improvement....
my concern was about the sinergy between the materials,mast-head,thinking that adding more layers between them more moviment could have, less acuracy..,also a dedicate RDM head i bit less bulky,
in any case i just have ordered a new boom and it comes with RDM adapter..
hope it works!

I am also considering getting Point-7 booms, the new ones, 2021, seem really well thought out, and the adaptor seems to be almost undetectable from the photos I have seen.
I am tempted to get new booms because my Severne Enigma (170-220) has been historically flexy with 7.2-7.5, and the wave 150-200 might be getting old (it creaks and creaks)? When do you change a carbon boom, other than after it brakes ![]()

In the case of a well made carbon boom, the carbon parts should last nearly indefinitely. You should be able to replace the head & collars a few times before thinking about fatigue or wear in the tubes. Allot of times the creaking can be solved by a new head. If you want a stiffer boom just get a stiffer boom & keep the old as a backup....
If you are talking about that universal black soft plastic adaptor that you wrap around the mast, i think its horrible, rigging derigging take longer, hard to adjust boom height in water, adaptor gets deformed quickly, boom tilts slightly making it feel soft, easy to forget and drive back home.
Maybe you can get a separete rdm clamp made for that boom, you can ask them, they are not so expensive.
As we get away from SDM masts going to pretty much RDM masts, the boom makers will follow suit. I have a fairly new wave Chinook boom that mounts only to RDM. I converted an older HPL boom to RDM with a Streamlined boom head, which is a VERY nice head.
I agree. The soft rubber shims are horrible. I still have to use one in some situations.

Nope, it is a slim one. It basically disappears, and once installed it is not ever removed unless you need SDM.

On a Wave boom on one side and a big racing boom on the other the adaptor might be unnecessary, but on a mid size it can actually be a very useful feature. Severne has RDM and SDM specific boom for years, and both of my booms are RDM. I am thinking to switch to SDM for my 6.5 and 7.5 ACX, or a 6.8 ACZ, and I would have to change the whole head to do so on the Severne + use the adaptor RDM to rig my 6.0 ACX ...
My Severne enigma carbon booms adapt to either SDM or RDM without additional parts. They are 2019 onwards..
For those with the carbon Enigma, have you noticed the rear carbon arms becoming loose I.e with the adjustment clips fully closed? Mine is only a couple of years old and already has a heap of play.
