I was driving past an op shop the other day and saw this boom in the window. It was just the right size and shape to fill a gap in my quiver so I bought it.
It is in good condition except the brand has been almost rubbed off and is hard to read.
It does have a back end but I took it out to clean it.
Can anyone tell me what brand the boom is?

It is from the same factory as the earlier KA alloy booms, the Sunshine Booms and a number of other accessory brands. Good booms with my favourite front end. Reasonably stiff but subject to corrosion like all Aluminium booms. But if not left drowned in salt water they last a few years. I try to retire them after two years. Cheap enough to just chuck and replace every couple of years for peace of mind. Can do that 6-8 times and still cost less than any carbon boom. Best to use only for sails with boom length under around 200cm. For longer, carbon stiffness is noticeable. That length will suit your smallest sails well.

Well that is pretty amazing then, because the Chinook boom I bought is a great shape but it is not small enough for my two smallest sails. I was thinking I should get a sunshine boom to fill that gap (as recommended by Sailquik) and then this one turns up just by chance, that is the size and shape I want, and only cost $10. It was definitely my lucky day.
I'll need to put a pulley end on it for adjustable outhaul, but that is not too hard.
Will that boom head fit an RDM mast without a shim?

Yes, the only boom head that will. I wish all booms had this design

I have one already. Actually the one in the photo could be it. That looks like my North boom and my dining room floor.
I just need some stainless rivets. Any tips on attaching it? The current end has only one rivet.

Use two Monel rivets (5/16") Aluminium rivits are OK but may work loose after a while. You will need a big rivet gun with lots of leverage for the Monel rivets. You might be able to pull Aluminium rivits with a normal one.

Stainless Steel, Aluminium and Salt Water are not compatible. Maybe why a lot of Ali Booms fail ?

Yacht chandlers may have Monel otherwise Ali. Try and find someone with an Air Rivet Gun to attach. ( Aluminium Window/ Security Door fabricators ).

I need more basic instructions than that - I am not very tool handy.
Is this right?
1. drill out the single rivet
2. drill two new holes through just the outside of the boom?

According to my interpretation of the galvanic corrosion chart Stainless steel rivets should be less corrosive than Monel...
Aluminium would be best but is weak?

Last time I think I got a yacht chandler to do the riveting for me. It looks like I may have to visit them again.

To avoid electrolysis between alloy and stainless rivets get hold of a product called Duralak, I use it on my hobie cat, you just coat both surfaces and the corrosion won't happen.

If I spent that much on a boom I would do a lot more research before putting a pop rivet in.
An Aluminium rivet will outlast the boom

Done. I put in an aluminium rivet. The hardest part was getting the old rivet out.
Boom is ready to go. Now I just need some wind...
