Hello.
Boards:
isonic 127l
formula 161l
evo 80l
my wife has a fanatic shark 160l
"we need" new boards, but they are veryyyy expensive!!
we are thinking by new ones with 0km.
I saw boards in Epoxy sandwich and are the cheaper ones.
we can buy one for 1300? with 0km.
we are thinking buying 3 boards.
100l 115l and 130l or wide: 65, 75 and 85cm
we are almost on lake, so, free ride board is very fine!
we will never need the same size boards because she is 60kg and I'm 80kg, we switch the boards :D
what I'm seeing:
JP magic ride
RRD firemove
what's your opinion?? we will be "good" with epoxy sandwich? they only weight more 1kg 1,5 than carbon version...
Thanks!!
The newest Magic Rides in LTX do not mention anything about carbon fiber in the construction. My old Full Wood Sandwich MR 142 from 2016 was great and pretty durable.
I thought carbon was mostly about weight. Carbon is certainly not indestructible. My guess is for simple riding, gybing, and some jumping most people would not notice the difference
A new board for $1300, wow where are you. What build are you looking at on the JP board? ie what do they call it?
^^ I think he means secondhand and unused...?
Anyway - JP's use of "epoxy sandwich" is silly as they are all epoxy sandwich. The carbon ones are certainly more fragile and the lower end "epoxy sandwich" is a bit more durable. 1kg is a lot more weight.... but for most recreational users I think it is worth it for the longer lasting board (if it is subject to catapaults and being dropped etc. If you never crash, its not stronger is it...
)
Regarding epoxy sandwich: it is a production method where they put a board in a mold and inject foaming epoxy to about 2mm (by adding an additive to epoxy so that it expands 4-6x). At least that's what I understand based on some repairs.
I don't own such a board so can't comment on durability and performance. It is up to you to decide if it's worth the extra weight. Depending on the type of board, i would or wouldn't mind. Freeride, freewave and foil, doesn't change to much as these boards aren't super high performance and the shape is targeting a comfortable and smooth ride. For other boards, I'd spend some extra.
tbh, get in touch with a local shaper. They know better what you want then you do yourself and deliver a way better (lighter and/or stronger) board than one that's production made. I don't know where you're from, but in EU Puls is the cheapest I think and they make quality stuff (freestyle for 1400-1500 euro is a lot cheaper than a board form the shop).
regarding carbon. The weight gain of carbon is minimal, I'd say 150-200gr extra compared to a 120l 7kg full carbon board. Also carbon is very fragile because it is so stiff, fibreglass will stretch more before it breaks.
a lot of production boards with "carbon patches" have them made smaller than your fist.
carbon wins over glass in compression areas (your feet, mastfoot,.).
The stiffness of carbon improves reactivity, so for example when going for double moves in freestyle, it is a plus.
I have a v2 patrik frace with a glass hull and is so wonderful to ride. The glass stretches more so in choppy conditions, the board remains more comfortable/ controllable so I can focus on my riding and that improves overall performance.
i would also probably be better of with a glass hull freestyle board as I can't do any double moves.
Hello!
