bunnings sell an ultra clear waterproof packing tape, i've found this good in the past- used to use it on sail leaches for reinforcement on older sails etc and it never came off.

I use something called monofilm tape. Get it from local store and works a treat. Its clear, wide and incredibly sticky, best stuff i've found. Reckon duck tape wasn't sticky or wide enough and same story with that clear tape they use for packaging cardboard boxes. Never tried gaffa and others like that but it wouldn't look pretty, this monofilm tape you can barely see unless you look really closely.

I used to sail Laser's and i reckon using proper yacht sail tape, just go down to the local sail maker and ask for spare sail tape, it may not look the greatest, but it holds and is very light!

My 7 year old KA Kontrol 6.5 has just about ended it's useful life, but is held together by cloth tape. Don't know it's technical term, but it's usually just sold as cloth tape. (Has a grid network through it) The bottom panel must have 12 patches on it, and I'll just keep patching the decomposing monofilm until I see a post in the buy and sell for a suitable replacement at a good price. (No cams, max luff 480, boom 200, x ply )

gotta back the mylar tape. It does not stretch. If you put it on a crease before it tears then the sail will not distort in shape at all. If you get it on soon after you tear the sail you will have little to no distortion also. Nothing compares.

Tears in monofilm are quite often jaggered and difficult to repair with 50mm wide tape. I use 'Avery 900 Super Cast' clear vinyl film; see product data sheet.

http://www.spandex.com/au/Links/Sign%20Making/Avery%20900%20Super%20Cast.pdf

The fim is available in 610mm wide rolls and costs about $15.00 per metre. The film need to be applied to both sides of the sails. The 'Avery' film can be purchased in Brisbane from Spandex Asia Pacific, Woodridge; or Graphic Art Mart, Geebung.

It is similar to material used by Gaastra (Barry Spanier vintage) to reinforce the lower panels of the Nitro 3.

Fail to see what value scotch would be, other than to drown your sorrows for putting a hole in your sail
