Thats it... I now officially have at least one stuck zip on every piece of windsurfing stuff that has one.
Anyone have a sure fire way of unsticking salt-stuck zips?? Its giving me the zip-pip.
immerse the zip in boiling water (well, water you have just boiled). after 10-15 min use something hell pointy and thin to hook out as much gunk and crap as you can. hopefully the zip will move after that - has worked for me a few times before, it's just getting the zip into the hot water can be a pain. WD40 etc all helps too
Vinegar is meant to work quite well.
Ultrasonics do a good job too, but they're a bit less common than vinegar!
Some might say that you're supposed to look after the zips and not let them get so full of salt and crud that they end up getting stuck..
I just take my sails out of their bags and forget about it!
What about Silicon spray? I was struggling to zip up my weight vest over my, ahem, protruding belly a while back and the zip was really hard to move. A fellow sailor pulled out his can of Silicon spray and gave it a squirt and it suddenly worked like a dream. Where do you get that stuff and can it save crappy metal board bag zips from corroding to white dust?
I've used CRC/RP7/Penetrating oil with success, kept spraying it every day and wiggling it and it eventually came free
Ive had this problem alot with my board bags. NEVER use oils or dw40 ect. think about it. zips work on friction to keep the bers together. if you put a lubricant on them they are going to slip out and the zip will alwys come apart...
the guy with the boiling water comment is rite on the mark!!!
WD40 turns into a sticky mess after a couple of weeks anyway.
Easier and better to use some graphite, like... say... drawing on the teeth with a lead pencil. 2B is better than HB but both have worked for me in the past.
