Hi guys & gals,
just wanted to let everyone know that Qantas is doing some seriously cheap airfares to the island. You have to book through Oxley Travel to get the cheap fare.

Lord Howe Windsports has packaged 2 weeks gear hire into the deal for the 2 planned fortnights.

So for 14 nights accommodation, flights ex sydney & 14 days gear hire with whatever you need for the conditions it is only $2279.
That is a great deal and it is only on sale until 22 May.

Go through the Lord Howe Windsports site to Oxley or here is a link:
http://www.oxleytravel.com.au/lhi/23.html

Sailing on Lord Howe is a special experience and it would be great to see people taking advantage of a brand new hire centre in Australia.

Cheers,
Tim Northam

Thats not too bad eh. Whats the temperature like over there, is a 3/2 wetty enough?

Oh and what sorta gear do you have? Is it hard to BYO?

Swoosh - see their site: http://www.lordhowewindsports.com/home

LHI Windsports gear list (kit and cost): www.lordhowewindsports.com/hire_centre

Looks like it has been sailable there all pretty much all today (no wind here in Coffs): www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN60801/IDN60801.95995.shtml

Looks like water temps are about 17-20degreesC in winter

BYO gear - either fly it (23kg limits) or ship it over (early by the one boat) (if not hiring) - depends on how long you go for

Search this topic - their has been previous posts on shipping kit to and sailing LHI

dism, you're good!

swoosh, yep 3/2 is fine, 17-20 deg water temp.

Bringing gear is possible but can be a bit of a business.

As Dism says, if you do a search on the previous Lord Howe Trips, you'll get an idea of the ins and outs of it. If you want more specific instructions pls feel free to pm me and I can give you the various options.
One of the driving factors behind getting the hire facility up and running was to circumvent the whole gear/ freight thing. Also, by offering the latest gear we thought it would be a simple decision to just go for the 'bring your harness and that's it' mentality.

Main reason to BYO is I would bring my freestyle board. Had a read around looks pretty good, I think I shall place it on the shortlist, also considering maybe cairns or fiji. Ideally would love to go to jeri, but I think it might be a bit much to organise on my own unless I can find a windsurfing buddy to tag along, cairns, fiji and lord howe i think cater better for people who don't want to just windsurf.

One detail I didn't find in my search was gear insurance? Is this extra on top of gear hire or included?

still looking at insurance fro gear damage. that doesn't include it.

For the time being I think we will just do a pay for repairs thing, stay tuned...

Lord Howe was HOWLIN today! 25 Knots straight into Ned's Beach. Blasting around on the 84 litre on my own (well there might of been 2 dangle boarders around somewhere there). Guys get onto these airfares it's the best Lord Howe Deal yet!
25 knots again tomorrow into the lagoon so will be out for a flat water blast!

Hi Lord Howe.

Any ideas what you mean by "a bit of a business"?

Gear can come by ship or freightplane...Qantaslink will not take windsurf gear as checkin luggage. You will probably be ok with boom & sail but they freak out with masts & boards.

There is a freight plane which goes ex Port macquarie, they fly twice weekly, usually tues & Fri. They will take gear over on a priority basis. So, they will always take fresh produce etc before general freight, so you would have to get your gear there at least a full 7 days before you wanted it on the island.

The ship also leaves ex Port macquarie every fortnight, however, in the off season which is the windy season they regularly have 3 week breaks between ships.

So, if you can get your gear to port, and you are willing to be without your gear for a while either side of your visit it's all doable.
Otherwise, if you have a few choice bits of rig you want, bring them on Qantaslink and hire the other bits you need from LordHowe Windsports.

Hope this has been helpfull, if not pm me and we can talk further. Cheers.

I want to offer a big warning to everyone out there about Lord Howe:

You can't get a ham and pineapple or BBQ chicken pizza on the island,

and,

you may suffer depression as you come back to a big city after living there for 2 weeks.

and that's from a man who the day the conditions were finally good he buggered his toe.....

You can get a Ham & Pineapple pizza on the island now, and Dale, do you know what the unofficial name for it is? 'The Northam'...

Tim, can you order it with chicken as well? Is it really called 'The Northam' or the anti-Northam? (ante Northam?)

My toe is good now, and happy to offer carve gybe lessons around the nearest gybe marker or any chef wading around in the water at the time.

What is your 'large' range of sails and boards like for the 'larger/obese' sailor?
