Been having fun with the GoPro, slowly figuring it out. Made a new video the other the other day with myself out with kiteboarding friends. They windsurf also so I trust them completely!
Windsurfing/kiteboarding/one love.
And nice duck gybe! Might be old-school, but it's still my fave transition.
I really enjoyed that vid scottydog , good to see windsurfers and kiteboarders mixing it up together and everyone having fun
Thanks guys, glad you liked it! I'm from there, though we have a mix of expats and locals. Typically locals are outnumbered by expats in kiteboarding and windsurfing.
I think the key is to film others, so I got my kite buddy to jump upwind of me so I could chase him downwind. I have a few ideas of what would make cool footage, but definely need guys you can trust. For some stuff I might get out on my kite and see if I could get some aerial footage jumping near the windsurfer. Nice thing about the kite is there is less stuff to block the camera view.
Quite a few of us windsurf and kite so we sometimes rig up gear and swap back and forth through the day. Often when we wave sail the outer reefs, that's the easiest option as otherwise there is excessive kit on the boat, so I'll use my mates kite and he uses my windsurf kit.
Pretty good effort for first attempt. ![]()
To improve you might want to watch professional videos And take notes. They Use much much shorter edits (like only a few seconds each) and a lot more different camera angles to keep it interesting. A single pov gets boring pretty quick. Try boom mount/board/chest/kite etc.
it would look a lot better if all those clips of your head turning back and forth were deleted too. Makes it look very amateurish.
Just my 2 cents worth. ![]()
Cheers,
makes sense to watch the pros! The kite entry came from watching a kite vid years ago, I had a partial clip so worked out good. I agree with the shorter edits, though there was one part were the way everything timed I chose to leave it. It was amazing at the sequence timed perfectly even though I hadn't intended to do so.
I'll try the boom mount for sure, maybe board also. Seen the mast ones and they just make me dizzy. The key is not to have anything that messes with the sailing. I have seen some of the setups with long poles etc and that would just suck! When I was first using the goPro in Mexico wave sailing I ditched it as I was thinking more about the camera than enjoying the sailing. I might be better now though.
Funny I liked the head turning, gives the viewer an impression of what's it like to be onboard. Looking back at the wake is cool I think. But fair point I gather I'll get better at it. Planning to use 60 fps next time see if it gives smoother output.
also need to get friends onboard, if everyone sacrifices some time to film and help out then can get more angles etc. I was even thinking could fit a clamp to the gopro and fix it to random sailboats to film myself going past! ![]()
funny how something simple like a duck gybe can be well liked. I think it's because they are so smooth to do? Forgot to mention the video was made using moviemaker which my computer came with. I imagine there are some better options out there, may have to explore this down the road.
