Looking to update my windsurfing wheels,always had vans. But looking for something quieter, plus with 4x4 to get me on the beach, plus auto.
Looking at new or second hand,less than 3 yrs old, with the body style tray.
Net says tray length is 1850mm long.
Nothing local to check if my boards fit, with out traveling a couple of hrs, wanted to ask if any ones using one of this rigs as their windsurfing bus, or any feed back on anyone that's got one ?
Want to fit, black box 107 (219), and 101 quad (230cm), plus 430 mast and sails 6.2 down.
I would get canopy to put boards in diagonally and a sup on roof racks, but want to be able lock w/surf kit in back.
The trays quiet deep about 500mm.
Any feed back would be appreciated, cheers
I have a PX Ranger with a ARB canopy.
Boards- you can fit up to a couple of 6'8 surfboards in the back with a canopy. I am fairly certain your boards won't fit.
Sails- 6.2 and down won't be a problem.
Masts- the 430 mast are just a frazzle long but fit in the wheelhouse ok.

I discussed pricing with a dealer yesterday can get a new bt50 with the fruit xtr freestyle, no trade, current plate for $43 k drive away. Seams new car sales are drying up, lately. Plus stiff competition.
I'll take my boards with me, plan b is an alloy cage with a canvas canopy with the tails of the boards 45cm, sticking out the back, in board bags. With an internal alloy rack to support the boards.
That way it at least doesn't waste tray space for camping and other gear.
Could I ask how much your canopy was ?, I might look into removing the glass from an arb fiberglass canopy and fab an alloy door with cut outs for the boards tails to stick out.

A mate has one on the back of a dual cab Amarok and we have fit boards upto 230 inside all locked away. We got three boards, 5 masts, about 8 sails, booms, baggage and other gear in the back on a trip away when he first got it.
With a freestyle cab the tray is over 2m long, so you will have no problem at all. Being all alloy and fibreglass with stainless fittings there should be no rust issues from your gear, and they connect to the central locking of the car, so as soon as you lock the truck, the tray is locked as well.
At a guess I would say yes. I fit my gear in the back of an xtracab hilux with the lid down and locked. A ranger is bigger.

I reckon it was about the 3k mark with lift up windows. I could probably fit more gear in by the looks of it but have a bin for 4wd recovery and compressors etc and another with bits and pieces. My boards are to big for the canopy so roof racks are the go for me. Those AWLC Canopies look the goods
For $43K there are so many options where it will fit easily in a 'normal' 4WD![]()

Agree Mark - I had a Nissan Pathfinder and upgraded to a Nissan Navaro V6 - love the power but now have to put up with everything sticking out the back. Have a canopy with the back door up as I travel. Security issue plus rain comes in. Not real happy apart from the power increase with the V6.
Next time I change vehicles I'll be looking at a wagon type body again so all enclosed.

Agreed - why not get a full sized wagon 4wd? My Pajero easily fits 2x slalom boards, 4+ slalom sails, 2 masts & booms etc plus a fridge and second battery. AND still have room for 2 passengers in the rear seat, and a roofrack for a SUP or 2.
Sorry Nerdburger, the eye-brain-finger connections had a holiday. I didn't realise you wanted to know about the extra cab I have the dual cab. A great ute. Plenty of power and comfort.
Thanks for the replies, if ford offered the new F150, extra cab, auto 2.7 ecoboast engine with all the fruit, for similar coin as the USA, I'd be straight round to the dealer, cash in hand.
I've had work wagons before, pathfinder, prado's, driven my mates pajero.
All good cars, but 2nd hand for 35000 to 60000 kms same price point as new bt50 with canopy.
Only need seats for 2 adults and my daughter (4yrs).
Looking to do some adventure trips 3-6 mths and would prefer the ute for gear desperate from the cab, plus I've always hated chucking wet surfing/windsurfing kit inside a car/wagon.

Pkenny thanks for the update/feed back, from my home work, pretty hard to bet the value of the bt50/ranger on the lower spec.
Was also considering a troopcarrier but stupid dear heavy on diesel, plus hard to find a low km one that has been flogged, plus my off roading will only be beach tracks, dirt tracks, that the ifs setup of bt50/ranger will comfortable manage.

sqrt(1847^2 + 1560^2 + 513^2) = 2471
A piece of dowel 2471 mm long will just fit in, a 230 quad with rounded nose and tail? Maybe with a lot of jiggling. Go the single cab 2wd, 2317mm tray length, < $30K drive away . ( Ford Ranger, the BT50 is way too pretty for a ute)
