Whoo Hoo! and you don't even get wet...
Probably the same lake he sails on in the summer!
Interesting board. More like a toboggan.

hmmmmm.
I'm seeing the first time you get catapulted, slamming through the ice and into the icy cold water underneath, then having to do a waterstart while freezing your klonkers off.

Looks like fun...is he on icey lake or snow? Looks like it would be easier than sailing on skiis, much more like normal sailboarding..I always used to think about taking up sailboarding on skiis back in the 80's but there didnt really seem that many decent palce to do it here. Also learning how to gybe + carve turns at the same time would have been a challenge.Do they do it down in NSW skifields / main range these days ? Ive never seen any when Ive been out the backcountry.

Looks like great fun, but really annoying to watch - far too jerky. Really hard to get a good look at it when it keep cutting to a new shot every 2 seconds.

I assume that video was shot in Tassie?

Seriously though, those boards have a longtitudinal blade instead of a fin. Could you apply the same to a conventional windsurfer? I have always fancied the idea of having a board that you could use in really shallow (and hence flat) water.
When I see the ease kids ride those skim boards with at the edge of the beach on nothing but a film of water, I imaging what a ride you could have on one with a bit of wind power - if you could overcome the lack of lateral resistance!

I knew a guy who sailed on skis on the snow in the mid '80s with a windsurfing rig. He had a bridging device across the front of the skis where the sail was mounted. I believe they even had a snow meet with likeminded skiers/sailboarders. Those were the days before snowboards, someone surely must've tried mounting a sail on one of those by now?

I hate to say it, but kiting definitely has the edge over a windsurfing rig on snow/ice.
Both skis and snowboards work very well.

They were what I was talking about..As I am XC & tele turns are different to parallels I didnt fancy having to learn the rig flip + carve ski turn at once..At the time I think they were mainly used on the flat between Perisher & Smiggins..I suppose you could use them between Thredbo & Kossy or Charlottes & Kossy along the plateaus.Actuallt there are porb a few places that would work.I always imagined there was only not much wind or a gale down there though..

Agreed. Getting dragged around uncontrollably behind a kite in the super gusty winds and rocky, tree-laden, ravine filled mountains is even more spectacular. There are some amazing vids.

But yeah, makes sense on ice and such, in the right environment.

I was thinking more open ground kind of stuff.
Think that chick on Top Gear at the NOrth Pole.
NOt so much mountain, more flat ground curling country kind of stuff.
Not in Australia, for example.

Hillary should have used a kite to get to the summit of Everest, not only was he the first to reach the top he could have been the 1st to fly over it as well.

thats one of the nicest set ups Ive seen for ice. it would probably get you over the odd bit of broken ice, snow drift or open water. those 2 rails underneath look similar to an ice yacht called a Fire Bay Scooter . they are a boat like iceyacht that steers by sail and pilot weight , rather than a tiller

In sweden we're having competitions in "soppslev" which freely translated to english would be soup-ladle.

Here's a video from south sweden championships in 2009.
