No wind today
just thought i'd post some pics of my local spot, Lake Burley Griffin or The Swamp as we call it.
The lake when its quiet...
Some of the local boys...when the lakes not so quiet.
KA360 playing around....
The day we got invaded....It's not even safe inland![]()
Hope you enjoyed our little water hole.....By the way, the kiter got smashed by a huge gust that poped the kite bladder. He had a big swim home, karma or what
.
Thats a unreal little hood river you guys have down there
I might have to visit you fellas one day and check out the action down there![]()
The dude in the 3rd pic with the neil pryed sail looks like he is cranking 30+ knots.
wow, nice looking spot, good wind too ;)
I need to go to AU some day, you guys have way too much wind, more than you need ;)
Damn, I haven't sailed in Canberra in yonks. Everytime I went there (90s), it always seemed to be offshore all the time.
Where do you guys take off from?
Anyways, great pics.
Moby is right, most people travel out of Canberra to go windsurfing.
What the pictures don't tell is that generally the middle of the day wind direction is west, and unless it's absolutely howling it will be very gusty.
The fun stuff is in the last afternoons during sumer when an easterly blows in from the coast, can be anything from 15 knots upwards and usually quite constant.
Found 1 more pic sorry about the focus but it was a new camera and I wasn't up to speed with it. The rider who we'll call "S" was out on a 6.7 Hellcat and a JP Super Sport, From memory it was 25K+. He just kept launching into these massive airs all afternoon, It was such a show I stopped sailing went to the bank and got my camera to catch some of the action.
You ACT sailors need a weatherstation of your own on Seabreeze close to the lake.
If easterlies are the best wind it would be good to have a weather station to the east of the lake so you know when the wind is coming too.
Burley Griffin actually looks better than Narrabeen Lake as in bigger and more open to the wind.
We get live reading from the yacht club, but for the easterlies we study the BOM readings from Braidwood we get a few hours notice before its due. We can time it to almost perfection, once it hits the Canberra airport we've got about 15mins to rig and hit the water. Mother nature is pretty good to us, the easterlies always seem to come through just after we've all knocked off work for the day...like I said timed to perfection.
