My husband finally decided "if you can't beat them join them" and tried windsurfing while on our family holiday.
He did well and really enjoyed it and was looking forward to another session but had a lot of pain with carpal tunnel syndrome that night and wasn't game to do it again.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
It was 1 hour windsurfing with a small sail (3.6m) and 150L board in 10 knots.
Does he suffer similar pain from doing other activities? Perhaps he gripped the boom too tightly.
If pain persists, see your doctor.
i treat carpal tunnel everyday .....was it pain only whilst sailing and a little after or has the pain remained?
Did he have pins and needles, numbness or were the fingers locked into a flexed position?
The pain wakes him at night while he is asleep. I think there may be some numbness and tingling as well.
He uses his hands a lot for work and work sets off the problem.
Windsurfing seemed to stir it up although the pain was more in the palm of the hand rather than the wrist.
He felt that as he needs his hands for work he'd better not windsurf.
best thing to do is to get x2 wrist "cock up splints"... splint in a close to neutral position for sleeping.. no need to wear during day..... must have the metal inserts... like rollerblade splints. try this for a week. If no better let me know will tell you some other things to try. Also if not settling get anerve conduction test. If showing gross nerve conduction speed looks lkike he may need an operation.. very small operation.. quick recovery.. usually close to 95-100% success and back on water quickly. PM me if any other questions
I remember when I was learning that you took more of a toll on your hands and forearms before technique came into it. You end up muscling the rig around a lot more, and you don't know enough at that stage to have things balanced.
I would really recommend that he gets into sailing slowly to get used to it.
I also recommend getting him to practice rigging and unrigging, again and again.
