My Wife want to go on holidays and likes the sound of Hawaii. Great! I can get some sailing in amongst other things. I know nothing about Hawaii. I'm not a wave sailer more free ride and jumps on chop.
would love some advice from others who have been there, where to sail, budget places to stay, hiring gear etc.. Looking at a week to 10 days.
Is June or July good for wind?
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks

If you say you prefer freeriding .then head to Maui & then try Kanaha beach Park. You could also try spreckelville if you are a keen sailor...

Kanaha has come up in a few threads. It's been good reading the older post and learning information .
Thanks for your input.

I went to Maui the first week of April this year. I rented gear from Second Wind. Believe the gear was $55/day. They hooked me up with a 2018 Fanatic Free Wave board with Ezzy masts and 2017 Ezzy Zeta sails. Gear was barely used and in mint condition. Unfortunately it was raining most of my stay with off shore winds. Maui has been getting hammered with rain this year, so hope by the time you go, it lightenes up. I wouldn't go to Kanaha Beach Park on off shore winds, it's risky! Kihei beach would be good when It's off shore at Kanaha Beach park. Good luck!

Thanks Magic,
I read your post in previous post about Maui .
Looked up the hire places, yes the gear and prices seem great.
Everybody says the Staff are helpful and would advise where to go depending on the conditions.
It sounds right just to take your harness and associated items, eg helmet, sunscreen . Specially if you aren't going to Hawaii solely for sailing. ( so I say to my wife, Je Je )

I went over last year in the winter school holidays, had trouble with kimo's not having the van I ordered, but to be fair that was due to a US public holiday & most vechiles being out. We ended up going with Fox car rentals.

Next time I would use second wind for the gear hire (I used Matt Prichard & second wind last time) as second wind have a good range & top line gear/close to Kanaha beach park (Matt is about 25 min away from the park). It probably comes down to brand preference in which gear you use will dictate which hire shop you go to.

quite a bit of accommodation on Airbnb & the like, so lots of options, I stayed somewhere that appealed to my wife to keep her happier

You are going at the perfect time of year for what you're looking for, Kanaha will be windy enough almost everyday, and the surf, what there is, will be small, and way outside. Staying on the north shore will save you money and travel time. Staying on the other side, especially in the Kaanapali area will cost quite a bit more, but it's resort style if that's what you want. The traffic from the west side (Kaanapali, Lahina) to the north shore, has become very congested and will take some time, somethings to consider.

If you go in Summer(Their summer), you can stay on the north shore. You can rent a house or whatever in Paia, Haiku, Sprecks etc. On wet months, always better to go in Kihei way more sunnier!!

I always rent from Matt P, but yes it's true, the quiver is in Haiku...so if you rent a house...in Paia or Haiku it's will be a short drive to swap sails or boards. If you rent on the south shore like Kihei(where you can also sail), second wind as mentioned is a good stop.

Haiku, and Paia is what you probably have in mind as Hawaii, Kihei is a city as any city(rather small) on the side of ocean, with concrete, mall, food chain etc.

Wailea is $$$ but got some pretty nice hotel(south side). You can have the same scale of hotel on the west side, like Kaanapali for example but the trek is a lot to go sail in Kanaha...could be 45(Kaanapali) min vs 15-20 min from kihei.

It is usually very windy in july!

Try and push it out closer to 10 days rather than a week if you can. Sounds like MagicRide was unlucky with the lack of wind
but Maui summer is windy everyday on average. June July August all windy, just pick the cheapest flights.

You may want to up your fitness as you could be sailing 3-4 hours a day (more if you're obsessed) for potentially the whole
time you are there. Also maybe gloves on first couple of days unless you have Mike Waltz type callouses already!

That's heaps of great advice, thanks guys, booked our tickets yesterday , heading off at the end of the month and managed to get six days in Maui during the trip ( remember it not just about windsurfing Je Je ) get to go to the North Shore on Ohau as well. Stay on the north side of Maui.
Havent had much chance to sail in the last couple of weeks so I will have to get out on the pushy, surf and do some chin ups to arrive fit.
looking forward to it.

Protect your feet, some sort of bootie is highly recommended, or learn how to keep your body shallow.
Don't kick a coral head, easily done during a water start, they can be shallow, and can ruin your trip.
Good feet = a great trip, so have one.

I will try to find my booties from my indo trips, never sailed in booties though. Good suggestion because I am pretty good at kicking rocks here. Yesterday I bruised a toe and I don't remember doing it.
Do you get used to your booties quickly?
l know I don't like wearing cloves, they always feel to thick. Or maybe it's just because they are for winter gloves and over there you use thinner gloves for protection not warmth.
Thanks Mastbender for your inputs.
