Hi
Does anybody have any experience of windsurfing in Bali?
My initial research suggests Sanur on the East Coast.
Could be handy as we plan to go to the Gili Islands aswell and boats leave from nearby.
Thanks
Don't know if it helps much, but I have been a number of times surfing in Lombok, on the far southeast side there is a kitesurf school in a lagoon, beach is called Kaliantan. After one of my early surf sessions on the inside of Awang bay, I went back in the arvo for a bit of exploring on my scooter, the wind was a solid 15-20knts and I kept on thinking it would be a great spot for sailboarding as well as kitesurfing. The lagoon has an outer reef about 200mtrs offshore with beautiful clear water and a white sandy beach on the inside. Definitely potential there.

Main wind during that time are the SE trade winds. Don't know how well the trade winds work around the Sanur area. Probably not that good for wave sailing but the lagoon should work for flat water sailing. For waves try Canggu on the West side. The wind doesn't really get very strong here though. So you'll need a floaty board.
Probably doesn't apply to your trip but the other spot is up North in the strait between East Java and Bali. In that area the wind gets a turbo boost to about 25 knts on good days. The big problem up that way is that it's not really well setup for tourism. There is a place operating from East Java called Bangsring Breeze which runs windsurf boat trips to Pulau Tabuhan for guest (www.bangsringbreeze.com/).
There are supposed to a bunch more wave spots along the East Java coast that work during the trade wind period but most are only accessible by boat.
I 'vaguely' remember Jason Polakow windsurfed Indonesia a couple of times, but cannot recall if it was Bali.
There's a Youtube / RedBull Video somewhere...

That was Rote Island. It's about half way between Bali and NW WA. Not the easiest place to get to but has very good dive spots as well as great surfing.

It's a crazy vid of JP sailing Desert Point.
End of February 2015 I was there. Not much in the way of wind but a storm front came through and I hired some gear from here
ripcurlschoolofsurf.com/ It Left as fast as it had come. Had maybe 10 mins on the water.
But I think if you contact rip curl school of surf they should know when the best time to head to Sunur is.
I sailed canggu , around July on 2 seperate trip - 15 odd years ago .... Was fun DTL side shore - mostly 5.3 / very floaty board - I was 80 kg at the time - took a 90ltr twinser .... 1 trip was windy everyday almost , the other maybe 50% , now I would take a 98 ltr dedicated wave rocker and 5.2 .... also sailed Kuta beach break a few sessions ...Had waves unto logo high ..... Really fun place lifestyle wise to check out BUT ,,,,, since I went - think Canggu area has EXPLODED in population ( alot of nomadic working abroad remotely surfer types etc) , huge villa developments everywhere , Canggu was a tiny village - now has gyms and lots going on ) .... and surfers - so maybe its completely mobbed out now - at least that's the way it looks YouTube when they post Canggu vids - looks horribly packed with surfers ... so I don't know these days ....
