My buddy and I were gonna go visit Cape Hatteras in North Carolina during the summer. This would be our first windsurfing road trip, I have some experience in Windsurfing and he does not. I was wondering if anyone was from around the area and could give us some pointers/tips on where the best place to rent gear, stay and eat. We're looking to get some fast winds and warm weather and were wondering what would be the best time to go between the months May-August.
This is my first time using a forum website so I'm sorry if I put this in the wrong category!
Nothing wrong with your question, there are some US guys on the forum, hopefully someone will have some info for you.

In my opiniom, June/july they got a high pressure that site on the atlantique ocean and pumps good wind for weeks and usually stop mid july. Avon is the hub, you can rent gear at ocean air. Usually you can rent a house with a bunch of windsurfer and drive to the ocean side or sound side(2 to 3 km with waist deep water). If you have more money, you rent sound front or ocean front. Village to look for, rothante, waves, avon, Buxton, hatteras is kind'a far. If you are camping, frisco camp ground.
Early may you will have north easter that can dish some solide wind and waves. If you also surf or Sup, the best wave spot magnet on the east coast in my opinion.
Hey Dude,
This forum is a bit different to a lot of others, we are probably, more relaxed and tolerant.
If you stay with us, you'll eventually get used to our Aussie sense of humour, don't let it put you off.
And obviously Stretch is correct, there are people here who know American stuff.

Stretchy was over there not so long ago too.
I sail Hatteras yearly. Their are 2/3 shops. Ocean Air, and Fox, and in Salvo Barton's. Rental from the first 2 .Ocean Ar is a full service shop , which you can sail from. Canadian Hole in Avon is the most popular spot to sail, free, showers and restrooms. The islands curve, the best location to sail vary with the wind direction. Ocean sailing in particular. Soundside sailing is very popular. Sailing starts at Rodanthe village, thru Salvo and Waves, then Avon, Buxton, Frisco then Hatteras village itself. Their is a another sire to sail that I quite like, it's Salvo day use area, also free, with restrooms and showers, lot lots of kites. And Quebec girls.
as far as where to stay, renting a house is the most economical, ocean side is more expensive. A central location , is most desirable unless you can sail from the house. My pick for you would be Avon. Close to all sites. Ocean Air staff is very friendly, helpful, fully stocked and will offer locations that suit the wind best.
several real estate companies are there. I have used a few, Outer Beaches, try Mary, and tell her Gary from Colorado.
Hatteras Reality.
I can aslo suppy the name for a small cottage on the water in Buxton, that would be very reasonable , and nice for 2or 4 people.
i would be remiss if I didn't say, summer is peak season there, rentals go up, from the spring or fall. Wind in the summer are not so consistent. If it were me I would go in Sept.
this is a great area of seashore and history, Black Beard was here, wild horses, shipwrecks, local food, my fav eatery is Pops raw sea food bar, in Buxton, near the Hatteras lighthouse. Free ferry to Oracoke Island from Hatteras village, take car for free, at the end of Hatteras village is a museum Graveyard if the Atlantic,
free, nice on a windless day.
the closest airport with passenger service is Norfolk VA. About 100mile Away.
Having a car , van , suv , almost essential.
to drive on the beaches you must have a beach driving permit, and AWD or 4 wheel.
Ocean sailing is great, with a large local contingent, very very friendly and helpful, talk at Ocean Air to connect.
dont know if you can private message me.....?
The soundside sailing is one of the best for new sailors , shallow, chest high in many spots.
some instruction available from shops.
The site Iwindsurf.com has forums and there is a lot of info. there on Hatteras . Check stats. for the wind .
Wrong country!!! But let us know how it goes for you. We might go there one day![]()
My apologies for smart arse comment, seems there is a wealth of knowledge for you. Have fun ![]()

unfortunately I have been only once -- in May 2015

sailed Soundside as I am not a wave sailor
heard the same thing about summer - hot, $$$ and less wind

May through mid-June is my favorite. Consistent winds, warm air, warm water and before the full crush of the summer crowds.
