Hey all, I'm looking at moving to Thailand for awhile but i want to go to a area that is good for windsurfing, and suggestions on what side of Thailand e.g Hua Hin / Pattaya side of the bay is the best to go to? Not sure which way the wind direction is over there, cheers Jase
Amara Watersports near Pattaya have a great setup and host a small but active windsurf community. Gets ok wind for biggish gear and certainly for foiling. Amara and Craig (who is from Australia) are very friendly - I was there yesterday and they always remember me when I turn up every year or two. Can keep your gear rigged at their shop on the beach for a fee, so just roll up and go out, and have showers and toilets plus there is a cafe there. Suggest emailing Craig and he will give some good advice.http://amaraws.squarespace.com/
Amara Water Sports and Club Loong Chat (Loong Chat about 300 meters North of Amara). Both of the clubs are super nice, but wind is pretty rare phenomenon in Thailand. You will need a foil (and maybe a portable fan too). Preferably your weight is under 10 kg (the thinner the better) and your gear is made of 100% carbon. When in no wind country you will need the lightest gear on the earth, super pumping skills...Be aware that there are sometimes PLENTY of garbage in the sea - every 40cm there might be plastic bags, bottles, wood sticks, you name it...(makes no good to your carbon toys to hit them). But dont worry food is tasty here and there is no snow here either :-)
Current wind speed and wind history at Amara can be found on Holfuy website then select Pattaya Blue Lagoon Kitesurfing...
And Wind Guru and other gurus know nothing in this area as we have thermal winds here - have to wait untill the land is boiling then the rising hot air will suck the cold air from the sea, but it needs blue sky to get the heat from the sun - if it is cloudy this will not happen...
Thanks heaps for the info boys, yeah i been to Thailand alot and never really felt much off a stiff breeze, was hoping there was a secret area, not to worry the beer is always cold over there
