Sydney has a strong southerlies forecast for the Easter long weekend!

So I am keen to improve my GPS scores for my team. Where is a good place get a sail in a southerly, preferably on the north side of Sydney, or should I go down to Botany?

sandy point in pittwater @ palm beach is usually strong in a southerly or s/e, the wind channels down there for a long way, although the "flat water" may be a problem... if you sail out the back a bit past the cross chop from careel bay @ there's not too many boats out it can be fun. I've found a southerly usually comes through there around an hour after its hit the airport. I'm not sure where else you can go north of the bridge other than manly harbour. Clontarf is ok in south east but not much fun in a straight southerly...

How do you get to Sandy Point? I looked at Google maps and couldn't see it.

I can see Careel Bay, so do you launch somewhere around close to the park on Barrenjoey Road?

Hi Moby

I think the road it's on is Nabila rd. Driving north you turn left at the palm beach marine wharf then follow that road around a little right veer and take the next left turn down a narrow laneway to the beach.

When you say flat, how flat do you mean?

I say this because in a Southerly, SW (works but is a little gusty except in the middle) or SE (a little gusty except in the middle) you can sail out of Fairlight/Delwood or Diesel Pool*. I have had some awesome days sailing there with 4.7m's on my 88ltr waveboard, and the jumps are excellent as the swells really come in (but you don't get waves).

It can be a b*tch to get out on some days but it is worth it (especially when you live 1 minute from there!).

Its really named Sand Pt. When you come down the hill out of the bends at Palmy take the first left, then right into Iluka Rd and then a little further on there is a lane way down to the beach/launch area. Dont even think of parking in the lane way, rangers love it. You can do runs across towards Soldiers Pt (western side of Pittwater). You couldnt really call it flat but if you wait for some of the larger vessels there are some good jumps to be had off their wakes.
You can also go to Sandringham on Botany Bay. Sail out from St Georges sailing club upwind and do runs under the exposed sand bank off the island.
