Surfbent on universal. Mystic makes a nice mast protecter. Foam protector glued to the nose of the board, they can hide damage. I broke a universal using a deviator, I don't recommend it.

Don't let go your boom when you catapult

When I was intermediate, I gaffer taped EVA form to the nose area (a few layers). being a whole sheet, it helps spread the force on the board. It did not look pretty, but it saved my boards. I never liked the concept of those mast deviator devices.

As you become more experienced, try to sheet in with the back hand as you're going over (this can be impossible sometimes when tired or taken off guard suddenly). This will reduce the force of the mast when it hits the nose, or make the mast/rig completely miss the board.
