Are any of you guys windsurfing with 11 meter sails? I am wondering if I can use a 48cm 105 sq. inch weedfin with one.
I have chopped a 70cm Drake race fin and made a 48cm weedy(@45deg).
Its seems to work nicely with my 8.4m and 9.0m

Hi Rubby,
I use a Select Anti Weed 51cm(20") formula weedie(its bigger than it sounds) on a 9.8 Gaastra Nitro 3 with a formula board and it works well.
Check out Select fins as they do bigger weedies than most.
Thanks for the quick replies, I appreciate the response here. I own a 48cm weeder which works fine with my 8.0, 8.4 and 9.6. Soon I'll have the 11 meter sail. A guy has offered to box a formula fin with a rake angle for me. However, don't weeders have a wider cord for a reason? Is it to reduce spin-out? I've a Lessacher fin in the making, a Project 11 Duo weeder 36" in length. It's costly and not intended for the 11. That's why I was hoping I could get by with the 48 on the 11.
Hi Rubby,
To answer the question about weedys having a wider chord:
As far as I can figure out, big long weedys have a problem where the centre of effort of the fin moves back, compared to a normal upright fin.
This has the effect of making the board want to turn downwind whenever a gust hits you...
JP get around this by having a wide chord at the root, and a narrow chord at the tip, this moves the centre of effort up (and therefore forward because the fin is raked).
As for whether your 48cm will work with your 11m? No idea ![]()
In 11m conditions you can't really go too far wrong; jeez it's gusting to 7 knots and I think my fin's the wrong size, what will I do? ![]()
Actually, I'll probably be able to hold onto this pig in winds up to 16 m.p.h. I'm overpowered with a 9.6 up to 20, but I can sail rather comfortably in the straps with one at 17-18. I went to a regatta last winter and saw what the big guys can do with 11-12 meter sails. You can be blasting at rather high speeds with them and that is nothing to sneeze at!!! I've contacted a Select dealer who carries the Delta XL and XXL weeders. He chatted on-line with me about it. Now I'm waiting for a photo of an XXL he has for sail that has a slightly damaged tip.
