What is the general rule with regards to the size of a weed fin compard to the size of a Normal fin. I have tried searching this but have come up with conflicting answers.
I have a 31cm Fin and want to get the equivalant weed fin. what size do I need?
Is about 26cm (depth) about correct.
Cheers
May depend on sail size and type of board/use.
Attached is a link to Wolfgang Lessacher's site.
I have a couple of his fins and intend to get a couple more. My JP weedfin still collected floating seagrass on the leading edge and was prone to cavitation when pushing upwind, whereas these don't on either count. They rarely cavitate and are easy to correct if this happens.http://www.designlessacher.com/Website/Weedfins_Laenge.html

I hate the way Europeans seem to use commas when it should really be a decimal point. As in "1,414 times longer"
That's a long fin.
I remember reading an article in Boards a while back where they blind tested the same boards with different styles and size of fin.
No surprise that everyone really notice the size difference - even a couple od cms seemed to feel very different. What was a surprise was that no one could pick different styles of fins in the same size - even freestyle fins. Just didn't seem to make a noticable difference to upwind performance or early planing.
Don't remember whether they specifically tested a weed fin, but it's food for thought!
I thought the depth had to be about the same for each.
But it is complicated, there's weedys and weedys.
I have a 50 x 245 small slalom (65L) that I am using with a select evo 35 turned in to a 24 weedy (thanks to Elmo) This works for a 5 or 5.8 koncept. I have also used it with a JPslalom III 54 x 235 (84L) but my preferred fin on this board is a JP slalom 42 made in to a 29 weedy (Elmo).
I also have a JP FSW (91L) that I use a 26 Flying objects weedy in (this is a much slimmer fin) it is ok on the ocean with a 5 combat wave and sort of works on my 5.4. I have used it speed sailing with as big as a 6.6 koncept but horrible spin out (despite good speed)
What type of sailing are you doing as there are now weed wave fins available but these are different to speed fins.
Tell us your weight / board / sail / location combo and we can give some more advice.
The JP freeride weedies are well regarded a 31 should see you right for general freeride. If your 5.7 is a wave sail and you want something more turny for waves then maybe the weed wave. Some suggestions on the JP site here http://www.jp-australia.com/2010/index.php?id=411
You need a weeder with more surface area but less span than an upright in general. However, after sailing weeders extensively, I have found that with the biggest sails i.e. 9.6 and 11 you needn't increase the weeder size when rigging up in sail size. I use a 48 cm Hydrotech with both of those sizes and an 8.0. The 8.0 does spin out in chop. Don't base your decisions on the Lessacher fins, either. I am still testing the use of one I purchased last summer. Soon I'll be trying it with a Formula board and the 8.0 V-8. Lessacher recommended a 36 cm fin for sails up to 10. However with my 9.6 I found that although it doesn't spin out, the Lessacher is very slow getting up on a plane when the winds are fluky. In a steady wind, they're great, fast and smooth. However, the board crabs sometimes, again in marginal conditions. The wider hydrotech works better for me in gusty conditions as it planes through the lulls better. If you are using the more upright someweed types of fins, sizing can be different, too.
I can't believe he is such a pest that there was a whole cartoon series about him in the USA, that Mo bloke from one of the WS forums created it I think
