Hey guys,

i'm after some wave board advice. i've got a jp 69l rad wave and was thinking of getting a second hand wave board to cover the lighter conditions. i weigh 72kg and would be using it mainly with a 5.2 but might look at getting a 5.7 maybe. would be using it mainly south coast nsw ie Wanda, Gerroa etc.

Any advice as to size, brands etc would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

bdl.

EVO80 if you plan on riding onshore and DTL

If a bit more early planing req'd, a good FSW like the RRD 77L

Yeah I have Evo 70 and 80 and the 80 is a great light wind wave board. I changed from JPs and couldnt be happier!

Don't be scared to go bigger than the traditional wave board...

A couple of days ago I had an awesome session at the g'loo, couple of logo high faces but mostly shoulder to head, I was on a 125 litre board. Everyone else who was on a sub-100 litre board said it was their worst session of the trip... I was hooting and carrying on, they were swearing and going back to the beach.

Just my experience, I'm not what you'd call a big wave slasher but for me it was an epic day!

have a look at width! I am the same weight and my light wind board it 56cm wide - a Quatro Freestyle Wave, a little flatter in rocker and easier to "get around the park" to pick up waves
cheers

dude i've been riding the JP 69's for the last 4 years, and have continually been swapping my 80L boards to find the best for me at 72Kg aswell.

the best i've come across that was good and cheap was a 2005 JP rad wave 80L.
they have a square tail so get up on the plane easy but are still really slashy.
they work really well as a light persons light wind board. just throw a 9" fin in and you will have a winner with your 5.7.

it all depends on what you like riding but i've found some wider boards i couldnt gouge the rail in hard enough coz i didnt weigh enough.

Nebbian what type of board were you on out of curiosity. I have an old Tiga 125L I am riding however is a little heavy and has an older style shape. I want a board to use in the waves/chop but do not want to go too small due to being a fat bastard (100clicks) and flukey winds.

Prob look at 115L - 125L- Kombat/aero or similiar looks OK

I read a post recently regarding strength of 120Lish freeride boards, ie they are not built for jumping or will not last if jumped?

Hi mabbot,

The board I was on is a custom wave jumping machine, 125 litres (I think!), double carbon sandwich, a bit heavy but bulletproof. It was built for Hardie to slash and jump at Corros in light winds. I'm 85 kilos and this combo was perfect for the early sesh on that particular day... when the wind picked up I used my 80 litre Acid, but then jumped back on the custom when the wind dropped off a bit.

Not sure what an equivalent board would be, you certainly can't buy this board anywhere for love nor money. I think that lots more people would enjoy themselves in the waves if they had a bit more flotation for lighter days, instead of grumbling on the beach as soon as the wind dropped to just under 15 knots... anyway who cares, more waves for me

Whoa, you're 85kgs?? Last weigh-in, I was 87, and I'm at least 2 feet taller than you...what're they feeding you out there in the wild wild west, Nebs?? [}:)]
