Posted before about sailing in Noumea, but that now looks like it's not on the radar.
But how about Vanuatu during September/October? Any good for sailing? If so, are there places with decent (not wally resort) gear for hire, or is it best to bring your own?
Traveling with wife and two children, so need more to do that just the sailing.
Tips on locations and accommodation welcome.

i was in Vanuatu three summers ago...well Port Villa at least. I was there mid-year and while the waters would be awesome to sail, at that time of year it was not windy, nor was there any evidence of rental gear. more a scuba-dive/snorkling meca methinks.
i had a great time regardless. i was surprised to find out that they are very poor people, but somehow very cheerful. plenty of nice places to stay, regardless of budget.
just be prepared for 'island time'. dinner at restaurants will take up to two hours to arrive...don't get stressed, just plan around it.
from my own research and trip there, it's windless except for storms and cyclones. people do kite there but its a pretty desperate affair
lovely place and really nice people. 60kmh is about as quick as traffic goes, and you'll be glad because there have been no road works performed for what seems like 3o years
check out the waterfalls and have a snorkel at the small island, all located on the main island. some amazing fish at he small island and its all pretty safe. taxis are hi-ace type vans and cost you about 3 to 5 aussie dollars each to get to most spots. i also went to peele island off the top of the main island and it was really nice. There are more remote communities living on islands further north but i was warned to have malaria shots etc before venturing to those, so i didn't bother
apparently it's amazing how much windier newcal is, and just a short flight away
