So I got my new Maui Sails 400 SRS wave 50% carbon RDM. Unfortunately the mast doesn't work on my 5.3 sail. Isn't that crazy!!! I thought so. I thought I did all my homework asked enough questions. But I found the answer why my 400 mast won't rig in my 5.3 North sail.
See if you guys can figure it out.
Nope, but nice try. The mast is newer and is a constant curve per Maui Sails staff and their web page. Maui Sails moved to constant curve at the year of 2015 and that's the year of my mast.
Try again.

My 5.2 north needs a 430, extension too short?
Lotsa other things.
Diameter of your new mast might not fit inside the luff of the North.
Head caps can be uncompatible.
You might be forcing yourself to rig to North Mast compatibility tuning, but you're not using a North Mast.
We should presume you have correct downhaul and outhaul lengths.
Different 400's can be different lengths, by as much as two centimeters.
OK, you win, we can't figure out your problem.
Wow nobody has gotten it yet. So that means this problem could happen to you all, and you wouldn't know it until you rig. Keep guessing ... I thought I knew my stuff, but there is always something that stumps us.
Yes, I even have a 45cm mast extension. I was shocked when I found out what the problem was. I will let this thread go longer until someone gets it.
Are you sure you know your stuff???
You bought the wrong board, your name is a JP board whilst your pic is a Naish and now you have bought the wrong mast for your sail???
Very funny Ka43... and what are you talking about, I never said I bought the wrong board, I loved the JP Magic Ride, it just had a manufacturing defect. So I returned it for the Naish Starship. Funny thing is, I wanted the starship in the first place, but they were sold out. Then a new shipment of starships came in. Funny how things happen for the right reasons. Funny thing is, you can't figure out the answer either Ka43.
Let's get back on topic here, as for my new mast, It will work great, just not with my 5.3 sail. That's a hint by the way. The mast is flawless by the way. That's something you all haven't said yet, if the mast had a defect. Keep guessing!!!
Is it relevant which North sail you are trying to rig? Cams? (you do say wave mast, not presuming its necessarily a wave sail)
And you say the mast is new. Maui Sails website www.mauisails.com/masts doesn't list any 50% carbon masts at all, let alone an RDM. You're not lying to us are you????
MikeyS,
You are getting much closser now, but still haven't cracked it yet. Now I don't feel so bad about this issue, since it's taking a while for you all to figure it out.
Any mast should fit in a wave sail, granted the mast has the general measurements for the sail. it's the spring back time that makes a wave mast a wave mast. My 5.3 sail has no cams by the way I know someone is going to get this answered. I can feel it. Keep guessing.
will assume mast and sail are ok and sail takes RDM
as you say mast is CC and so is sail
the WORST thing i HATE is ...
mast is a little longer than needed and sail does NOT need much on extension
requiring basically a zero mast extension - NOT many around
any hints ??
My 5.3 can take a SDM or a RDM, and yes mast and sail are in phenomenal shape. More hints, battons pull away from the mast way too far. That's what stumped me the first time. I asked myself, why would that happen with a 400 mast in a 5.3 sail.
Keep guessing!!!
Love it!!! Tardy is the only one that knows the answer, cuz I told him earlier. Don't give it away Tardy... lol
I have had this problem when rigging my Naish force using the correct Naish mast (battons pull away from the mast way too far), so please put me out of my misery and tell me how to sort it!

Your safe ..ive forgotten ![]()
Imax,
That's what came across my mind as well about the sail, the battens, but yet of course it's a North sail not Neilpryde. Both sail manufacturers start with "N" though.
If you indeed bought a Mauisails SRS Wave Carbon 50 rdm, the mast is definitely hard top.
Since Mauisails changed to constant curve masts, 2014 onwards, the rdm mast range does not include 50% carbon masts and are now either called Gladiator or Katana.
A photo of the mast would help clear up the situation.
The shop may have taken you for a ride...
If it is a hardtop for any reason, my issue is not a result to that.
Maui sails told me it was a constant curve, as I called them and described the mast to them. and it is plenty flexy at the top.
Here is a better pic of the mast from Bic Sports of California.
Next to the pic, it has a whole write up on the mast, also displaying the year it was made 2015.
The Gladiator and Katona masts are 2016 models on Maui Sails webpage. But we are going off track here, because the mast is fine, it's the rigging it in the sail that's the problem.
How about , your rigging to the specs on the sail and they are wrong .....Too much downhaul ?
???
OK GUYS HERE IS THE ANSWER....
My 5.3 North Sail was made around early 2000, with makes it older. Older sails, at least North and Neilpryde as far as I know have substantially different luff specs from the newer sails. That threw me at first. Plus the 5.3 sail didn't have a mast size on it any where, just a IMCS of 21-23. Bottom line is, the luff is too big for the mast. 12 cm or so too big. So the sail works is a 430 only. All newer 5.3 sails take a 400 mast.
So I will keep the mast , so I can use it with a newer 5.3 when my current one wares out.
You're dislexic and your sail is actually a 3.5m ?
Your mast measurements are wrong, it is not 400cm long ?
Your ext. measurements are wrong ?
Aus729, read my answer, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to get it. It's a 5.3 sail on a 400 mast. Hello, can you not comprehend that. I hope I'm not talking to a of 3rd grader here.
The answer to this a luff measurement issue. Nobody here could figure that out.
