Would love a new ultrasonic but can't find one anywhere, what's the closest thing to it out there now?
At the high end, the JP Superlightwind and the Fanatic Falcon Lightwind are similar. At the bargain end, any "Formula" board from the early 'noughts will be surprisingly close too - Starboard Formula 175, Bic Techno Formula or Formula 170 F1.4 - there are lots of others. They won't be as refined as the Ultra but they'll be $2K cheaper, and if they've made it this far, they'll probably be pretty durable too. They often have deep Tuttle boxes and can be used for foil too.
Had a look at the JP but it I s shorter and narrower With lower volume.
will look into the fanatic.
the Ultrasonic was just a awesome board for 10 to 12knot blasting with a 9m sail. Mine still works but between soft spots and cracks I'm not sure how much longer it's got. I'm tempted to spend some money and get it professionally patched up but really not sure it's gonna hold together much longer even after that, every sail now results in another ding
Sympathies for your Ultrasonic hitting its last legs...
Love mine which is still going ( reasonably) strong.
could consider a Falcon Lightwind as a replacement, or maybe one of the really big freerace boards on the market?
Had the Falcon Lightwind, not the same as the Ultrasonic in terms of crisp and eager planing because unfortunately its no carbon construction. I could really feel it flex in small chop. One of the bigger sizes Futuras would be my suggestion: Very early planing with 9.0 and faster than both.
