More on fins.... or problems with with them.

I have a board that seems to have the front fin bolt hole positioned slightly too far back on a tuttle box. The Select fin I normally use on this board fit's perfectly (strange but true) but recently discovered that if I use any of my other fins in this box the hole is partly obscured by the fin box hole. Upon measuring the hole distances on all of my tuttle fins I found the Select outside of the norm by a good 4mm. Question is, what can I do about it? Anyone else have this problem?

Yep, that's what I had in mind, or at least, lengthen the hole forward slightly. I just wasn't sure if doing that was the way to go. Cheers.

The other issue could be that the threaded insert in the fin has rotated slightly so it no longer aligns. Have a look at that before elongating the holes.

Agree with Mr. Love.

With the fin removed from the board, if you screw both of the fin bolts into the fin, then look at them from the side, both bolts should be parallel with each other. If the front one is angled, the brass nut has rotated. One end of the nut should have a screwdriver slot in it and you can use the slot to rotate the nut until the screws are parallel. Remove the bolts, then try fitting the fin and fin bolts in your board again.

If the nut does not have a slot, you can try leaving the fin bolt in the nut, then pull the fin bolt to rotate the nut until both fin bolts are parallel.

If there is no slot and not enough room in the fin box adapter to rotate the nut, use a bolt on the nut to knock the nut out, rotate the nut a little, then fit it back into the fin. Look for the screws to be parallel when the nut is back in the fin. You might have to remove/replace the nut a few times until the bolts are parallel.

Hope this helps.

The guys using new selects certainly arent going to try to convince people otherwise, just keep that mindset and we'll be happy

I've never had any luck with Selects fitting my boards. Tuttle or US. There always seems to be a lot of sanding involved. But in this case the fit in terms of where the holes are are perfect (in this board). My other fins don't line up which leads me to think the holes in the box itself are out. No amount of adjustment to the inserts make any difference - not from lack of trying. The front hole is honestly out by a large margin and I'd be forcing the screw to get it in, most likely damaging the thread in the process. Thanks to all for the suggestions however!
