Just drifting unpowered at the mercy of storm swells and container ships that could just sail over the top of him.

Looks unsinkable to me. What are the chances of getting hit by the bow of a container ship while drifting? What are the chances of a yacht going 10 knots, in the dark, on auto pilot running into the bow or the broad side of a container ship? A lot higher I'd think.
Don't write them off like we did with SUPs. We're not getting any younger.
