An interesting topic for those of you with a film making lean..
An awesome competition is being run by an Iconic Australian sound gear company called RØDE.
(they make awesome mics and accessories for those of you into any production)
Its a 2 minute short competition - which is great cos i like short snappy edits.
I thought i would enter - more for the process than through any hope of winning!
its a little story about my journey getting in to video production with Reflex Films and some of the worlds that decision opened up for me
If you are in to video production - and with the advent of GO Pro mania i know there are a few of you here -you may get something out of it - there is a little bit of windsurfing in there too.
Check out the group on vimeo (Rode Rockumentary) - there are some fantastic entries that will inspire you to go out and shoot some stories if you are of a film making bent
Roll on Psych Mic :
Nice one mate. Well done.
Looking forward to some more of your vids. Always teamed so well with great music. Chuck some more up as Im looking to hear some new tunes.
Yeah perhaps you should start this off Matt with a short example of a 2 min vid with some mauritius footage just so we can learn some ideas![]()

Thanks for some of your kind words (- although i have to say that making a film of yourself is considered quite high up on the list of wankery)
I hope to be able to get some Mauritius footage out soon
Here is my favourite film from the contest - which illustrates that a great concept trumps everything
Thanks for having a look at the video
- that has put it into the top 8 (out of 126 videos entered) for views alone.
At this stage - the final 10 videos are chosen by a panel of judges - which is a good thing as it gives the competition some credibility - rather than just being a popularity / viral email vote for me contest.
To be honest i'd be happy just to scrape in to the final 10 as there are some really awesome entries there that are so creative and well executed. But will not be at all surprised if it doesnt make the judges short list - sometimes you learn more from trying and failing than having an easy run.
- which is something that years of windsurfing racing and wave sailing competition has taught me
If you are interested in some inspiration for future movie making projects enter "rode rockumentary" on the vimeo search page and you will be taken to the group.
I would say that the vast majority of the videos on there are shot on Canon dslr gear(5ds, 7ds and t2i / 550 ds) - i shot my piece mostly on the humble Panasonic gh2 with a 20mm lens.
Awesome work Matt.
You've come a long way from see you sailing with early head cams with battery's sealed in back packs at the local to footage that matches the best pros.
I think your video shows your journey as an inspiration to what can be achieved if your prepared to work at it. Def gets my vote!!
