Elmo you are the only sailor i know that can include a seamless water start while gybing and still manage good alpha's

I reckon if palm up/down works for you stick with it.

The end result is what counts not how you do it. Unless you are wearing boardies over your wetsuit

I do both. The palm up is better for the fast spinny rig flip but palm down seems better for the slower flip in a step gybe and when you're hanging on like grim death in a fast bouncy gybe. Palm down is better for clew first exits too. However palm up with the quick flicky rig spin makes the sweetest gybe imho.

Hear hear Elmo. The reason we wear wetsuits is they are made to get wet. Im am presently a huge fan and regular performer of the waterstart..........................

Thank god someone cleared that up for me, I was told it would take me at least 3 seasons to learn awesome planing gybes....Now i don't need to waste that time and just get on with windsurfing.
Thanks Elmo.

Yes you would be a champ to duck gybe a full on race sail at speed.

Good thread - can't wait for my next decent sail to try a palms up gybe. Would be interesting to see the results of everyone gybing "goofy" handed.

Tried this since this thread started, mind you on a f/s gear, not a slalom type.
Found no advantage, but again perhaps just not used to it.

Because of previous shoulder surgeries, I constantly move between palm up and down on the front hands, but always come back to up on the gybe.

Perhaps makes a diff in chop or bigger sails ??

There are few sailors out there who use the under hand grip on the front hand (me included)
Here's a shot from way out west that shows under hand grip in a different sailing application.

For me personally it comes from learning to sail many many moons ago using the trusty Z boom.
I also find it puts less pressure on my wrist/elbow when sailing for an extended period.
A few crew who have developed carpal tunnel type injuries (tennis elbow) have been instructed by their respective physios to try the under hand grip to reduce stress/strain ?

I tend to jump, jybe and even wave sail this way

Big thanks to Mr Mindfactory for another shot from the vault.

Kev

Yeah looks like it has morphed into the Volwater gybe topic.

From the PWA..

Peter Volwater. “I was scared for my life! He was quite mad and he is quite big and quite strong, and it was me that crashed into him! I said sorry, but I should have known to stay clear for a while. I probably should have sailed up to Izmir and stayed there for an hour!”

If i'm correct there are no rules in slalom,so in theory you could come blasting from up wind at the start and take everyone out thats in the heat..eg by cutting them off and running over the nose of their boards.
You would also have to have alot of confidence in your on shore fighting abilities but if there are no rules......

It's good to be back. 2 months in jail was all I could take this winter. No insulation in C Block. Next time I'll wait til at least september to hand-cuff 11 horses together before sending them into a crowded shopping centre.

Anonymity?? I'm Boris, your Kev. You need a romantic weekend away or something?

Windwarrior and Boris,
Which way do you guys hold your fists when fighting - palm out or palm in? I see Peter V is a palm out slappy type fist and Micah B is a palms in tight fist (although I hope he can sail better than he aims)

Neither.
Ever since I made Chuck Norris cry, no one bothers me.
