Not complaining just putting this out here, there seems to be lots of spam thread popping up more commonly

It's an inevitable part of any forum that has public sign ups. What you aren't seeing behind the scenes is the multiple attempts per day by spammers to sign up and post. That you see as few as you do means there are things being done to limit it without making the normal user experience unduly difficult. It's a balancing act of barriers vs user experience.
source - run a small forum and see in the logs how often it gets hammered by spammers and bots. Being lower profile, there are fewer leaks but still we get an occasional leak.
Yup, it's not a simple or easy thing to deal with. As blocking techniques get more refined, the spammers find new ways to work around it. I ran a small forum many years ago and the number of bot/spammer registration attempts that were being blocked each day was incredible. I can understand why the iwindsurf forum recently went to subscriber-only posting, although I'm also convinced that move will be the death of the forum (which was already very inactive compared to seabreeze...). There's not much in the way of USA-focused discussion these days, so I spend most of my time browsing here.

I just didn't expect people to be targeting a water sports form lol

Either it's a bot crawling ip addresses or urls; or someone in a third world country being paid pennies per post. You are thinking syringe when they are actually using a very big lawn sprinkler.
