The wife just bought me a Sony action cam, can anyone show me how they mount the camera on the mast and/or boom
The goggle mount works well but will set you back 50 bucks. Try to angle the cam downwards as much as you can with the goggle mount it will give you a better shot.
Here's a couple of mounts I knocked up myself. The boom mount I was not that happy with as the cam cops quite a lot of spray in that position. I also got quite a lot of vibration noise with it. The noise could probably be reduced but getting rid of the little arm and bolting the cam straight to the clamp but the sony has a very sensitive mic so whenever you use a mechanical mount to a solid object you will get some vibration noise with the sony. I super glued a strip of rubber to the mount surface to try and absorb some vibration. If nothing else it saves a bit of wear and tear on the case.
The mast clamp I am very happy with. I thought about the design long and hard before I made it. Kind of suprisinq actually as the idea is so simple but the simple ideas tend to work the best in my experience. What really made me happy about the mast cam was that it was the very first prototype with no mods and it worked great first go. Usually I get these little projects right by about the second or third attempt. My first mast cam movie was actually using the boom clamp on a vario head sail at the very top of the rig. It came out okay but was very jerky. I realised I wanted to move the cam halfway down the mast and the results were a big improvement in picture quality. The mast clamp can be used almost anywhere on the mast with the exception of the very top section where the mast is skinny. An RDM style adapter would fix that issue.
Here's a couple of vids with boom clamp and mast clamp views. you can see the limitations of the boom clamp compared to the better results of the mast clamp. People have seen these movies before but I'll post them up for your benefit.
