Spotted an add on a local windsurfing Facebook page today for a Starboard formulae 147. For $750. It looked pretty old with a few dings so price seemed very high.
Did a quick Google image search to find out how old and one of the first pics to come up was the same one in the ad only this time it was from an ad placed in 2011 by someone else in a different province and the price was $500
And guess who had messaged them to buy it?
If you buy a board 10years ago for $500 why do you think it's worth $750 now
It's a $300USD board at best around here, even with foiling being popular. Actually you can get a few year old foil boards for less than $750. Somebody is dreaming.
Supply and demand. If he sells it at $750, well, that's the going price. If he sells it at $300, well, that's the going price.
He probably does not want to sell it that much, so it's a speculation.

Yeah. Didn't someone say that those formula boards have increased in value since windfoiling became big?
A lot of 90's boards resurfaced at $250-$350 range. Also later boards at unreasonable prices.
Don't see them moving though.
What is moving is anything which can be foiled.
A few years back I bought cheap $500 beginner boards , ( some with sails ) , Starboard Starts and Gos , big Xcite rides etc . Over 2 years about a dozen . I cleaned and fixed them up and consigned them at my local shop. Ended up with a quiver of new sails and good masts .
I was on a good wicket ![]()
Now , there are no good cheap beginner boards to do this .
Its gone the other way .
Im glad I did what I did when I did it .![]()
Is it a case of its now an antique so its increasing in value like the olden day 1980 vintage cars ??
Formula windsurfing class is old ............ but its newer than kiting so maybe get some new material
wow, was a serious question, chill dude. Older things you cant get anymore increase in value........ dont they?
I dont think it has anything to do with kiting or when it started??
edit, but since you asked, some of the ancient old fashioned kite boards from way back in 2005 have increased in price due to their age and rareness. Like the old pickle forks from before then. Do you think its maybe the same thing?
I think it's that boards eventually die . There used to be plenty of good second hand beginner boards to buy . Now there's not , either buy new or pay good money even for a good ten year old board which will be as good as a new one.
Apart from beginner or foil useable second hand boards , I think second hand stuff is reasonable.

If you can get that board for $400 or less, it would be a great starter board for foiling. On close inspection you can see that the finbox tops out on the top skin, without the chimneys. That means the finbox is likely to be strong enough for foiling. Not guaranteed, of course, but likely.
