almost copy of post on KA Sail...

Hello,
I am looking for advice to chose a second hand SDM mast for my Koncept 5.8 from 2007. I am recreational windsurfer and will maybe use it 4 times a year in west Sweden in 25-30kt winds. I don't see the need to buy a brand new mast and I don't find that many KA used mast around here...nor see any sail... My two bigger sails 6.6 and 7.8 are S-type and share their gold north 4.60. In Goteborg it is pretty easy to find north, simmer, loft and pryde on used market, Swedish northsails distributor is close by and NeilPryde and simmer store a bit further. By experience the northsails masts have a specific shape, would it fit to Koncept from 2007? I understood the pryde don't have the proper flex, but since the simmer are compatible with north and north sails compatibility mast chart is giving the KA Sails compatible...what do you think? what brand and model should I chose. Do you have good idea to find second hand KA mast in north of Europe? I found a Northsails Silver 400 close by, good to give it a go? Otherwise should I take a 4.30 mast or a 4.00 + extension, the sail is given for 4.30 mast luff?
Thanks for your help and looking forward to rig this beauty, which receive so many appraisals for it's speed, control and light feel.
Best regards,
Plettil

Hi, I've used the North Gold series and Pryde X6 in that sail. The North was better but the Pryde gave it more twist which was better for a lighter ridder.
Not sure about a 55% Carbon mast (Silver) but the Gold series worked the best for me.
I would try and get a 430 mast as a 400 will be a bit too soft unless your 75 kg and sail will give its best performance with the right mast.
Send an email to Peter at Ka as he may be able to help you out.

Kato is more of an expert than me and has more experience with KA sails, but I use a 430 Pryde X3 in my KA 5.8 and it works very well. So go for the North Gold if you can find one, but if an X3 is all you can get, it will work nicely.

Hi Plettil, I agree with Kato, send Peter at KA an email: peter@pwsurfsport.com

Peter is based in the Netherlands and may have some second hand KA masts laying around which should do the best job by your Koncept....

Hello,
Thank you all. I am 75kg and 1,90m and I will not make any attempt for speed record.
For the moment, nothing else than a north 4.00 around. I will look further.
Good surf!
Best regards,
Plettil

The 2007 Koncept was a favourite of mine, held onto my 5.8 just for keeps sake and a spare. I only ever used it on my very old Powerex 400 SDM dropshape with a tip exstension. Worked really nice and was all I had at the time, you may find some old 430's that may work, but you need to know what to look for and how it should set. But as mentioned talk to Peter and he can give you the details to look for something compatible.

Ok, thank you very much.
I contacted Peter and I am waiting for an answer. The KA forum seems pretty empty of ideas and users. There is north silver close by, with a good price and I think I will test it... Problem is that I have no clue how this sail should look and KA is not common in the area...but I'll have to figure it out.
Take care and good surf!

Here it is rigged on a northsails silver. Good feelings, good stability and acceleration. May be not pulled enough on the mast foot.

Any idea or advices?
Best regards,
Plettil

Looks like it needs more downhaul, it is very full in the bottom half and the cams are quite rotated. The leech is tight to batten 3 you want it loose at least down to batten 4.
I suspect the mast may be a touch soft in the tip for the sail but OK. Crank some more downhaul on and take some more photos.

Yep the KA forum not very active, everybody using face book now. I look occasionally but not as often as I used to.

That's a very common quote around these parts.

Thank you for the tips, it is exactly what I need. Yes i was too soft on the downhaul. Mast is northsails silver 400 2010, with 34cm extension. I'll rig it again when the wind will peak up. I need also to place a spacer on the top cam...it does not push on the mast, just touch it.
Good surf and good wind,
Plettil
