Hi all,
I'm a windsurfer now on my second season with about 30 days on water. I fall a few times every time out, but I can get in the harness, planing, no footstraps yet but in good wind I'm standing on top of them. No water starts. Typically we get 5-10 knots here (Toronto) with occasional 15 knot days and very rarely 20+ knots.
This year instead of using our club gear, I purchased an old Kona One Design kit from a guy who quit windsurfing a couple of years ago. The board, fins, u-joint, mast are great, with just cosmetic board damage. The boom looks pretty sunworn (the foam is faded and flaking off in a few spots). And the sail had a few tape jobs done to it before. IThe sail is somewhere between clear and foggy.
But I went out for the first time this season and with each fall, tore a hole in the sail. I wasn't falling particularly hard, or aggressively "through" the sail. I always push the boom away when falling forward, and to not push the harness loop into the sail. On one of the backwards falls, I literally popped my head through the sail...
it was like popping through taut tissue paper; I didn't even feel it. Saran wrap would have given more resistance. For comparison, our club sails are all Severne Gator (my preferred sail), or Chinook Power Glides (the most durable, but way slower) and I've never had this kind of issue.
Is it normal that a good sail would tear in a fall, and do I just need to avoid falling or somehow throw myself away from the sail? Could I have put too much tension on one of the lines? (I noticed when I got back in that the outhaul had slipped altogether, though this might have been due to the tears deforming the sail shape)
I would say it is UV damage. The other components you describe as being sun damaged and the sail sounds like it is also. The films used in sails eventually deteriorate with prolonged exposure to sunlight. The UV degrades the polymer bond and gradually reduces the flims strength. All sails have a "use by date" but keeping them out of direct sunlight ( not lying them flat in the sun) greatly increases the life.
